Using ableton with mainly stock plugins for EQ, compression. simple delay, saturator, multiband dynamics.
I've got fab filter also but haven't used it as much as I do with stock plugins which don't stress the s*** outta my cpu either.
have u tried reverb and keeping it fairly low? It can give your mix a lot of atmosphere
U can also get a false reverb with an delay if you turn up the feedback and have a gate slope the tail off so its more in time with the bpm of whatever tracks ur working on

I can give those reverb tricks a try. I've used a bit but not with the gate method.
How useful is the autopan plugin ableton for widening sounds? Is too much of it gonna kill the mix?

Idk I use Logic idk what the autopan does, if its functionality is roughly a stereo widener/imager than you don't want too much, but if it sounds good its fine. Trust your ears
Its basically going to enhance most if not all of the side frequencies so be careful cause you don't want to much
If you're going to enhance the whole stereo image of the track with reverb and side frequencies make sure the reverb has its low end going to about 100hz shelfed off
That is if you're sending a kick drum or bass to a reverb, in general its good to do with most ambience generators, but don't over do it, as you could cause phase issues

You can use the widen feature in the utility plugin ableton has
There’s a free wider plugin too. It’s literally called wider and I like using it for vocals

Here's a track, I thought the stereo image of this track could be better and provide more depth to the track. Some parts sound very mono and dont really surround the listener

https://soundcloud.com/svvvvvvv/numero?in=svvvvvvv/sets/moderne-ep-1tbh you're overthinking some of the imaging cause about 80% of it sounds fine too me
good economy of space. for those noise shots just add some delays on them to taste when they are in mono and they will space out fine
also that tambourine sound does not need panned all the way to the right (but tbh its a taste thing and it doesn't sound that bad for me) it already sounds like it has a reverb so try centering it and adding a pre delay on the verb
also @DarkTechno and this is super important when routing your effects be aware if you're using a post fader or pre fader
Pre fader's are generally user for special fx, while post faders are usually more nominal

Thanks man. Working on alot of different stuff and trying to improve on each one i finish. Generally for the track above, i mainly used eq, compression, reverb and delays for mixing.
I mainly use the pre fader/post based on what im working with on the channel tbh, haven't done too much crazy stuff with it yet but i'll read up on it just to see my approach
Imma try to incorporate the feedback you gave and work towards improving the mix.

AWESOME
Good luck with the track
I been really just now been absorbing some of he game from the first couple pages and applying it to my tracks.
Mixing in mono and mid-side EQ a game changer

Mid Side EQING is GOAT
Tbh I don't even think about Left Right that much anymore unless the Stereo mix is off balance
I need to apply mono mixing more tho fr

Mixing in mono makes me think of the song like a sandwich. All the layers feel a lot more stacked because everything is much closer together.
I've been using this cheap ass bluetooth speaker lately bc my cars speakers blew out The output doesn't have a lot of range and not much stereo feedback. it actually helped me realize there's tons of devices out that have a similar sound tho so i would say always keep those in mind

keep in mind if the mix sounds good on a s***ty pair of bluetooth speakers or iphone speakers it will sound good on anything
Here is a good piece of advice
the bypass button is your friend
And the solo button is your enemy
And the solo button is your enemy
Solo is good for cleaning up a track with eq but then u gotta double check it within context

I know a few people who do it your way which is completely fine.
I used to EQ like that until I figured out which frequencies are the most important to address. The only time I solo a track is if I hear some weird ringing or something that I can't pinpoint.
Worried about plugins and s*** just upgraded to Apple M1 macbook and my ableton 10 cracked stopped working
