Oh nah like the echos and s*** really sound like they're another layer in the background. The drums pop up at you like they're holographic. S*** is crazy. I assume it's some forbidden knowledge Mike Dean is using

it makes the fx sends in the buss super loud and high def

no more parties in la is a good example but basically something a little quieter not super bass heavy or harmonically crazy

then in the mastering stage hitting a couple of limiters or something in a row with the last doing more than like 2 db of gain reduction. the waves l3 is a likely culprit in these scenarios

Yeah I realised heavy tape on the master is definitely one ingredient

True, but what makes those fx sends sound distinct from the rest of the mix like that? Surely its not just a chain of limiters? But then again I havent tried multiple limiters so you could be right

nah it literally probably is, this s*** is what mike dean is infamous for , but you’re missing an important distinction here it’s not that you’re putting the song through a ton of compression/ limiters that generally happens in every master. it’s the fact that he’s using a pumping one with aggressive settings (that just means it’s doing a lot) that squashes the song. remember this is in 2016 and kanye is a legacy artist even by this point which means the rules of mastering for the loudness war are at least partially being followed (y i guessed l3)

your ears are getting a little confused cause that distinction in the fx bus comes from detailed sculpting ( eq/probably no compression, but if there is it’s very light) and being really f***ing loud. which happens when there’s something happening in front on the master because the whole songs essentially contracting and expanding from hitting that brick wall at the end. it’s the same kind of limiting that makes a song seem like it’s dipping to make room for the vocal

Can anyone recommend some books or courses to learn audio engineering?

Anyone know how to add that “crisp” sound effect to vocal recordings while mixing?

For years I always notice that that is the thing that separates good bad vocals in my head, it’s like an effect that makes the s*** just sound crisp idk how else to describe it

hey while that guys last response is important yes what you’re looking for to get that crisp effect is called the air band (10k-20khz) make a shelf in the eq and boost there for that crispness if you have a lower singer you can got to about 8k it just depends on your taste

oh and if you’re boosting like crazy the. you should put a compressor in front of it just to smooth things out and also sorry if this is too basic but making sure your chain is “classically correct” can really really help so

mic > preamp (if you don’t have a preamp or preamp plug-in a saturator can work in a pinch) > compressor > eq > fx

if you’re using autotune it’s a common noob mistake to put it at the start of your chain, but don’t do that. put it after all your compression and s***. that way your voice is as clean and smooth as possible and the autotune will have an easier time with your voice

Not sure what gear you got but my favorite headphones to hear space and mix for space right now are Fidelio's, those and messing with binaural sends can do some crazy things.

Hey so one of the biggest things I've been trying to work on is getting out this granular overall sandy feel in vocals, I don't really know exactly how to describe it, but for everything above like 500 vocals will just have this grit that I don't know how to smooth out.

Is there any way I could send you a song I'm working on to see if you hear what I mean?
