hell yeah its something that you always want to have in a mix or else everything is just sitting on top of each other and youre not using any of the space that you have available (although you do want to mix in mono before you touch a panning knob). A tip I can give you is when you pan put the sound in mono and pan hard left or right (or not but dont be afraid to pan that way either) and then have it going to a reverb send and stereo separate the reverb a little bit.
Wow that's an interesting tip I'll have to try it out bro
And yeah sometimes it's easy missing what's so obvious and in front of you...lmao panning is like a whole dimension to the mix space I need to f*** around with

yeah definitely use it to your advantage in your mixes and not only do you have x and y as an axis to put your sounds but there's z too and you can create depth and you can do that with reverb but also compression too. Another tip is when you want something to be more of a background element put a compressor on the sound (last in the insert chain) and attack as fast as you can and threshold all the way down and then keep turning up the ratio (until it feels right) to draw it more in the background and that lets your more main and upfront elements pop through more in the mix (also if your compressor has automatic output gain make sure to turn that off or the whole thing is gonna be useless lmao) and adding a bit of reverb to it helps as well with this effect and remember also that a little bit of reverb goes a long way when it all comes together and one more thing is to compress your reverb so it doesn't drown everything out and you can compress that in the same way that you did the background sound
I think panning tracks is a key element of mixing that I've been missing. Anyone have any good resources for it, or is it just by feel?
Look at tracks you like in a stereo imager (ozone imager is free). This shows you where stuff is sitting in the mix.
Use delay
I've been messing with foley a lot more instead of just grabbing risers/fx
with some reverb, delay, and audio shaping you can get some neat results

Ayyeee foley is such a dope thing so use in tracks. I have a whole pack of sounds of an old phone being slammed in a bunch that I use as percussion sometimes

I need to actually eq and fade the foley while mixing down

AYYYYE DAT S*** RIGHT THERE SOME FYE
You should check out this plugin called "Wider" its a free plugin but that s*** is amazing and I think that if you put that on the foley which idk what it is but kinda sounds like paper crumble it would really go nicely

Thanks man! 2019 goal is to get a solid sketch out once a week and finish a track every 3 weeks. Foley was from a sample of Mønic walking in the woods. He had a couple sounds up on a site I used to subscribe to for samples, the foley was recorded with his cell phone mic lol. I've recorded my own foley but nothing that has worked in a song.
Check his stuff out of you have time - his music is always super well thought out and arranged.
Bass was originally a basic harmonic patch in serum. If you go to the bin, start messing with a sine wave and add odd harmonics. It slightly makes it square. Cool, now bandsplit, saturate, add harmonics, filter, etc. You essentially want to drive certain harmonics. Record yourself doing this and arrange the parts that sound neat. Shape the audio, distort, filter more, chorus, reverb etc. Bass resampling is a huge rabbit hole but it's a blast once you have a workflow down. Kept it simple and just wrote a one note bassline
Managed to sneak in a sample of the Grab Turismo menu sound effect (shout-out to paulstretch) as a pad too lol

How to get dirty lofi vocals like this? ( I dont want to buy & record on a s***ty mic either)

Dr dre whos one of my favorites has barely any sounds on the sides. Really surprised me

It just sounds like low level mic, close micd without a pop filter

Bro that tip gave me mad insight as well...
Matter fact, I only come here for what that guy posts

Haha i knew about that but I wanted to hear his thoughts on Dre’s songs being so middle heavy
Love his posts too though

If you can make a track sound good in mono, it'll sound good in stereo. Using subtle delays and stuff to create width is a really good technique. Look at some Noisia tracks in an imager, it's just straight down the middle
There are a lot of cool tricks you can do with stereo imaging. In this track it becomes more and more mono as the intro progresses, but once the drop hits the stereo width is added.
This is my favorite thread on the site I’m gonna try to post more here
Yo Paris?

Any idea what effects Qtip used on this sample? I def hear a low pass and a phaser, maybe some chorus.
I wanna recreate this vintage texture. If I have to get a***og gear to do so I will. Idk if digital can make something like sound like this.
Any recommendations on getting started with Ableton and music production in general?
