  • in this video i look at how Baby Keem handled being a close relative of one of the biggest artists on earth vs how others have done it (King Combs, Will's kids etc)

his calculated approach helped him build an actual fanbase rather than be written off as a novelty or a nepo baby (nepo cousin?). but of course, he also used resources that were more readily available to him bc of his cousin's connections

    what do yall think?

The difference with keem, is he’s actually a really great writer that did have to go through struggle and came with his own completely unique sound and influences that are outside kendrick’s era. Dude is a creative artist that actually helps Kendrick to be around. They are also super collaborative, getting ideas from each other elevating each other as artists and writers. He takes music serious and took it serious before Kendrick, he def deserves his spot. I think jaden does too, but that’s besides the point.

I like die for my b**** and sound of bad habits but it's kinda crazy that kendrick pretty much wrote both of them.

But make sense knowing he had industry producers and videos with his earlier music

I don’t think bad energy should be given to the title of industry plant or nepo baby
A lot of the most talented artists are that. Destroy lonely father was I-20, Ken knew Lil 88 since being a little kid, keem with Kendrick, lil darkie was shabazz palaces son. These environments it seems helps a lot just foster creativity and make great music, they just didn’t have to go through the bullshit of making connections in the industry like most artists had to. And that’s a blessing for them. If people like the music it stays. Same goes for people like teezo who grinder but just didn’t go as public with music till they had their behind the scenes s*** figured out, that’s what Miguel did. The negative connotation should be given to people like Rich Amiri that bot 70% of their streams lied about his real name and clearly was signed while claiming independent.

Kendrick didn’t write both of them, he wrote like one or two songs to our knowledge and reference tracks don’t prove writing, Kendrick and keem care a lot about the flow and cadence how things r said which references are also used for.

I think Jaden has done well for himself creating his own identity as an obvious nepo baby. Can’t really speak on Willow because I’ve never heard much of her stuff

yep. this is one point i rly wanted to drive home, just because theres a reference track doesnt mean one person wrote it. and someone "writing" on a track could just be kicking it in the studio or providing one line or even one word. people act like keem is kendrick's second save file in the rap world when we don't have the context to confirm that. but it's clear there was collaboration in the earlier stuff when it wasnt public knowledge at the time

Yeah, its just how studio sessions go really. People bouncing ideas off each other for every aspect

im doubling back on this bc its facts. i think that first line is worth unpacking though

the industry plant debate is interesting (and im working on a 4batz video for next week that's gonna talk about a lot of this) because the only time its ever really flagrant is when artists champion being independent but arent really independent, or start astroturfing this idea of a "come up" when in reality theyve been at it for a long time and are being funded by industry sources

people took the term to mean any artist that was signed, when like, if theyre not lying about it then whats the problem ya know? its a labels JOB to get an artists career poppin
