I feel like most mfs still have issues writing characters like this in a serious way, the wire gets the hood politics & dialogue correct
I think if a person is heavy in the burbs and has no access to niggas who’s in the hood and live that type of lifestyle they not gonna be able to just “imagine” authentic dialogue.
BUT In todays day with social media (IG live, Clubhouse) it makes it easier to hop in rooms with niggas from the hood (wether it’s NY based, ATL based, LA based, etc) and use it as research for whatever film you’re writing.
I feel like Jordan Peele made one "bad" and people was trying to write him off. The black creatives are similar to the black Qb. They keep trying to down play Lamar Jackson or you got to sit tight and be quiet for 6 years like Geno smith.
Mike Tomlin has to have a winning record every year to keep his job but guys like gruden and Matt rhule are given 7 and 10 year contracts without a second thought
Paid in full>>>>>
Now we talking!!!
Paid in full is one of those films I will never understand why critics rated it low (Belly I get it, even tho I liked it)
Paid in full has dope actors, a dope rapper acting (Cam killed it as Alpo)
Some of the most quotable dialogue ever, especially if you from NY you know “niggas die everyday b” and “I’m broke bebe” is a line always in rotation.
The story is good, even tho the real Azize said some of it wasn’t true.
The characters are interesting af, which makes sense cus they’re based on real life people.
I hear people say this. What black film made today is not for black people.
Every f***in slave movie they keep tryna shove in our face
Every f***in slave movie they keep tryna shove in our face
Im guessing you feel a way about the Emmett till movie coming out
If a movie is trash, I'm not gonna force myself to watch it no matter what.
I know its blasphemy not to have seen it
, didn’t know wood was also in this!…I’ll make time to watch
GO WATCH IT NOW

Im guessing you feel a way about the Emmett till movie coming out
Yeah I don’t care for that s*** at all. Yeah it’s apart of our history and it’s f***ed up. But niggas don’t need every f***ed up moment thrown in our face each year.
I’d rather take 100 different “Nope” movies instead

Yea exactly
S*** is literally great
These Black films/tv shows ya'll talking about aren't intentionally made for white people or made to "draw white people in." They just have cross-cultural appeal.
Shows like Insecure & Black-ish have a majority non-black audience while s*** like Empire had a majority black audience. The more rooted the media is in black culture (e.g. Tyler Perry), the less non-black audience you will have.
And there's way more money in cross-cultural media, which is why you don't see s*** like Paid in Full or This Christmas getting made and released in theaters. Studios already focus on Four-quadrant movies to make the most money. Getting money to finance some s*** that will most likely only appeal to majority black people has to be the hardest s*** ever.
Facts I rather my non black brother @proper be in here instead
I have to disagree. The Tyler Perry audience is definitive majority black, they are for more of the casual movie goer, and fair older. I looked up both directors to the Ashton Sanders movies. Joe Robert Cole, Rashid Johnson. Looking through their work, I think that it is unfair to say they made that for white people.
Yea Tyler Perry’s audience is old ppl, ppl that will blindly support black ppl and yt ppl his movies are literally coonery nothing but negative depictions of black ppl
And both those Ashton Sanders movies were truama p*** and didn’t need to be made
1 is about a black kid getting a job as a driver for a rich yt family mistakenly killing their daughter then dying by the police
2nd one is about a black kids poverty stricken life and then him ultimately committing murder and getting life in prison
WHATTT
YOUVE NEVER SEEN PAID IN FULL
One of the greatest films ever
Please go watch it
Way better movie than belly
Mekhi Phifer gives a damn near flawless performance
Wood Harris is the most awkward d*** dealer ever and it’s great
Cam’ron also has a really good performance as just a flashy stupid d*** dealer
“Will they still love me man?”
“ANYBODY THAT LOOKED AT ME WRONG. OWES ME MONEY??? ITS F***ING DEAD B”

Interesting, looking in to the Four-quadrant movies now. I think that is why so many of the stories that are being made have the same trauma elements that @twitch was talking about. They are the only ones that would get green lit.

I think a lot of outside ppl view all black ppl as one and the same, meaning they think we all watch the same s***. Not realizing just because the Jordan Peele/Spike Lee/Barry Jenkins fans aren’t watching Tyler Perry s***, doesn’t mean other black folks who aren’t as film savy aren’t eating up those kinds of movies.
Nigga was sipping hot grits 😭😭
That s*** was hysterical 😭
Dawg😭I was so confused watching that s*** man I was like, ''why dis nigga putting it inna coffee mug.''
I immediately thought abt that one Tyler Perry movie where girl threw the pot of grits at that one dudes face, 😂man dat s*** was funny as hell.
Also to answer @op question, me personally no. Am I bias towards black directors? of course because I’m one of them. But at the same time I’m not just gonna support s*** that I think looks trash strictly because you’re black.
Now my pops on the other hand? That nigga will watch anything with a black cast.
Im guessing you feel a way about the Emmett till movie coming out
That movie is more a pump fake honestly. Yes from the trailers it looks like yet another Black trauma film, but it's actually more focused on Till's mother and the work she did during and after the situation. Was made with and supported by the Till family so that make it better.
Though personally I've already seen so many documentaries and read so many articles and books related to Emmett Till's lynching and other Black lynchings that I'm just good on that movie. It's definitely a movie made for a newer generation of Black teens and young adults and white people who still deal with that white guilt s***.

I would say that most people have said no but the people here probably have a stronger opinion on what makes a quality film.
As you said your dad will watch anything. I think that is more the case with the older causal black audience. They may hold views similar to your dad. Then may just looking around on Netflix see that there is a Tyler Perry movie they have not watched and throw it on. Or if there is a familiar black actor they will give it a watch.
