You can also add Twenties, Black Lightning, Southside, The Chi, Black lady sketch show, Astronomy club, hell you can even throw in Kenya's other shows Blackish and Grownish. They all feature various shades of black ppl.

    exactly, thank you

I don't really consider Issa or Molly to be ghetto, they just use the vernacular sometimes.

Neither are ghetto but they want to occupy ghetto mannerisms when they are literally not.

And it's used for comedic effect.

I see your point but it doesn't really come off as offensive, at least not to me it doesn't.

This looks like everyone of Tyler Perry's shows

  • Apr 25, 2020

Bro, why is Kenya Barris the main actor in this...lol? The dude voice is trash..horrible screen presence.. and he can't act.

I hate the entire issa rae wave of "My entire media presence revolves around my radical blackness but I make shows about suburban black people that are about as "unapologetically black" as a minstrel show

I f***s with Insecure and to a certain extent Black-ish, but I get what you're saying. These shows focusing so much on "blackness" while operating in white dominated spaces incorporating every black stereotype for either comedic purposes or making a statement comes of as cringe and corny.

I wasn't feeling the first episode so I doubt I'll finish this season.

Like it so far. Yeah, it’s basically Black-ish done in the Curb style, but it’s a pretty good version of that. I enjoy the more mature humor and lack of corny/sweet sitcom moments that Black-ish. Kenya has a different style of acting, but I think he’s funny In this. Still tho, you can’t beat Anthony Anderson’s delivery. Mans just makes everything some dramatic and funny.

you can really tell Kenya is not a pro actor whenever he has very long dialogue. S*** sounds like he reading some s*** off a paper.

but yeah I wasn’t mad at all w this show. Pretty entertaining for what it is.

Couldn’t get past the 2nd episode. The show is trying entirely too hard to convey a much larger point on the black experience and it just isn’t hitting. I literally cringed at the scene where they were out getting dinner with their rich white friends. The entire routine just felt incredibly forced and inauthentic.

You absolutely right and I can't f***ing stomach it anymore lmao

Especially Insecure which I might just stop watching. The blackness on these shows is so performative. We are more than the hood so why does Issa have to have performative "I'm college educated and raised in the burbs but I'm ghetto yall" ass vibes. S*** is awful.

This is an absolutely ridiculous take. The multi-dimensionality Of Black People being displayed on that show and others is not “performative” it’s simply an authentic, full spectrum take on our experience as black men and women navigating a world designed to suppress that which makes us unique. I knew plenty of women who talked, walked, and acted just like Issae before the show even began and that’s part of the reason why I think it’s so popular because we all share in the same experience of having to navigate these predominantly white spaces while keeping our souls intact. We all know what it’s like to put on the “job interview” voice only to switch it back up once we get around our homies. To call it “performative” is completely missing the point and simply ignorant.

This show automatically loses for trying to copy curb your enthusiasm or even take elements from it. Bruh is not Larry David,he’s not even the black Larry David. It’s pretentious and somewhat offensive that the creator of Black-ish thinks he could play himself in a show

    No one care breh

Actually, there needs to be more fun black shows/films instead of all these black shows filled with black people trying to prove that their “more than just a black person”. Yes,we go through that experience in real life but it’s getting redundant seeing it on my screen so much.

Black films are becoming basically character studies at this point(or whatever Jordan Peeles making) I’m still waiting on that black director that blows up every boundary in front of him and makes a “There Will Be Blood” level film without blackness as the pitch.

That’s exactly what I’m saying bro, most of these shows the point is that they’re black and how people interact with their blackness and how they handle it. We just need movies/shows that don’t focus on that at all and just make movies. So many legendary movies are mostly with white people and they arent tagged as white movies they’re just tagged as movies but most black films are. It needs to be more about the human experience and not just focusing on being black. We had that run in the 90s/early 00s already anyways

Had a convo with a friend of mine a min ago about this. I think black peoples problem when it comes to film and breaking out of the box is that we just basically started too late and were just kinda artistically behind when it comes to movie making. White people have been making on a pretty big scale since the beginning of film,we’ve been making movie put into a limited box for a long time and the box is still not wide enough.

Worst of all is that black actors are falling for this Hollywood black power bs when literally all these films are funded or under white corporations. We basically sold blackness to white people so they can package it cheaply and sell it. Haven’t seen a black movie this gen as good or as black as something as let’s say “To Sleep With Anger”and that’s from the 90’s.(a lil bit of an exaggeration but I think it’s a great film regardless, not cause of how it depicts black people is what I’m saying)

Too many tokens leading the charge for black cinema imo. Not to say we’re getting bad movies from black people but we have too many films out now treating being black and black experiences like National Geographic.

JaeRell just perfectly described how it's performative.

It has nothing to do with black people being a monolith. Real life people partake in performative blackness too. Rappers have been partaking in performative blackness for a hot minute right now. Be blind if you want to.

Insecure is mostly popular with non-blacks.

Imagine comparing code switching for a job to someone making a mockery of slavery on their show (Due North) and faking "blackness" which is rooted in racist stereotypes.

Read some history then get back to me.

Black people aren't a monolith right.

Black people aren't all the same right.

There's no one way to be Black right.

Yet these shows all do the same exact s*** with Black characters. Watch something good that actually shows black people as different like David Makes Man or Queen Sugar.
