On my second reading of The Book of Joy. It's a mixed bag for me. Some teachings really resonate other times I just shake my head. Anyone else read this and has any thoughts?
finished brave new world, very odd and inspiring book
Ending is highly disturbing

*spoilers**
there’s so much to talk about why did he take out his rage on lenina like that?
Has anyone read The Wasp Factory? That book was really something else, especially as a debut piece.
Morbid ass drama/romance called i have the right to destroy myself by Young ha kim. Super short could read in like an hour or 2. Acid black humor amidst the mundane grit makes for a quick read.
Without spoiling, to me the book is about ennui and its ties to sexuality, And depression without the words or emotions to describe it. And art’s part to play in all this, in the view of the writer.
The complexities of sibling love/rivalry is brought up too, S***s about a love triangle for half the book.
the narrator is interesting af too. Kinda makes the book confusing but by the end he makes sense. If anyone read this before, i would love to hear ur interpretations.
Been reading Atomic Habits and been really enjoying it. Puts the emphasis on continual small changes over time rather then 5 magic habits that can change your life. One of the few self-help books that actually makes sense
Currently reading Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James. Really great fantasy book with a good fusion of original ideas steeped in African mythology. Long as hell though. 620 pages (which is long but not THAT long), but every page is dense as hell.
Usually manage to get about 120-150 pages in per day, but a combination of both the density of the pages themselves and the prose is bringing me down to about half of that.
Also, just recently finished Man’s Search For Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl. Highly recommend it for anyone who finds themselves susceptible to depression, or are having any degree of existential anxiety.

Bl, RW is DOPPPPPPE.
MBJ gonna ruin it.

There’s so much male on male f***ing, nudity, rape and child murder alongside just generally bizarre imagery in it that I have no idea how a live action adaptation would even work.
Like, what the f*** would Ball Boy look like?
I don’t think most audiences would be able to handle a faithful adaption of this s*** lol
Plus, hell, how’s the structure gonna work? If Dune is having to be split into 2 movies BL, RW alone would probably take up an entire trilogy, and it’s supposed to be a series in its’ own right.
They would have to go the series route. Maybe Amazon or Netflix would go for it.
im currently reading Kafka on the shore by Haruki Murakami. i don't fully comprehend the story, but the writing style is so beautiful. love his use of metaphors and how he expresses commentary on the way he views life.

I read that book over summer and loved it, it's a great read
just finished Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and it was easily one of the best books I've ever read. Never a dull moment in my opinion and it wrapped up the series with a pretty perfect ending. If anyone has any suggestions for books/series that you can really immerse yourself in the world I'll take em because this book hurt to finish because I knew I wouldn't have that getaway anymore.
1984 >

Gonna pick up middlesex soon, heard it was really good and I love longish character driven fiction

Crazy how, given it’s subject matter, Harry Potter is probably more relevant than ever.
A group of people attempting to overthrow an authoritarian regime that is permeated through fear and ignorance of the older generations of the world, and how the hatred of others is often conditioned into their children, repeating the cycle. (Malfoy, Crabbe and Goyle). (Hell, the Slytherin House is basically r/TheDonald).
How a character like Dumbledore, who has up until this point been perceived as this absolute symbol of goodness and righteousness, is exposed to having dark dealings and beliefs in his past.
Then you got things like the Xenophobic/racist parallels with things like the Muggleborn Registration Commission (although the idea of parallels like this are obviously not unique within the fantasy genre at all).
It’s actually kind of bizarre, because you can see all these aspects slowly creep in throughout the books in ways that are familiar to today’s world, with similar reactions and responses.

Still have to read Crime and Punishment. It's been on my bookshelf for quite some time. Even had to pay 40 euros for it. All the translated Russian Literature is so expensive in the Netherlands.
