I feel you OP that video of Drake performing views with the Rihanna image behind him gave off vibes it was gonna be a continuation of that dark spooky sound of iyrt turns out that was just a leftover from the sound
Views was the beginning of drakes decline imo (we all know he’s the most streamed rapper blah blah blah, the music quality has diminished argue with god)
I wouldn’t even call it a “decline”. Just a more mainstream approach.

The album was recorded and released as a response to Views-era songs leaking early
“That album was just kind of like, “Some songs from Views got leaked. What the f*** are we gonna do? Drop a tape? That was supposed to be Views, but it wasn't, at the same time,” assistant engineer on IYRTITL Evan Stewart told Complex about the impetus for, and execution of, the mixtape. "It was completely different and organic compared to a lot of his other stuff, and it's a lot harder. It was his first rap mixtape sort of thing with only two songs on it that are kind of sing-song. It was thrown together in three months—a last-minute decision.”
These leaks, however, not only shifted the trajectories of these songs, but also others that weren’t leaked. The sentimental “You and the 6,” which features a rapped monologue where Drake explains his mindset to his mother, was also originally supposed to be the Views opening track according to Stewart. Yet, it ultimately ended up on IYRTITL. What a different Views tone setter that would’ve been.
? whats the point of this thread
views is clearly that album he just shorten it to "views"
sadly it sucks
a lot of the og material n ideas it actually leaked and why it ended up a butchered mess including the title with a handful of great songs

Views would've been a 10/10 album if you mix IYRT tracks with some of the Views tracks damn
You and the 6 is GOATED
Fr, you can tell straight away on Views the energy isn’t the same soon as he starts to rap on 9. There’s deffo a difference in delivery pre and post-Views. Always thought this.
Views suffered from the beef man. He probably trashed some fire references from QM and others being insecure about the ghost writin s***
I know I’m in the minority at this point but I did and still really dislike views. I don’t know if it’s because of my expectations, like IYRTITL led into what a time to be alive, he was getting involved with the uk scene and singles like Summer 16 came out and I was expecting Views to be like a serious genre defining moment.
One dance leaked and I seriously thought it was a joke, then views dropped and that was the most disappointed I’ve been - like I thought views was gonna be his Blueprint man
100% agree. That’s why it left a sour taste in my mouth cause Drake was to me the best in the game in 2014-2016 (before views dropped)
I do think Views is the last time he put his soul into the mursick though but when he realized that the formula he created on Views generated his highest sales, I feel like everything else after was copy and paste. With each release, the soul of the music kept decreasing.

Funny enough, views is Drake’s blueprint in terms of what his artistry is/was/ has become.

I felt like this a decade ago as it was happening
Hotline Bling took off after the Meek beef, i feel like those two things are pivotal in determining the direction for views along with IYRTITL probably took all his “juice”/best material for what Views would have originally been
He should have dropped it that fall with that OG dark sound
I agree iyrtitl sounds completely different from views

100%, it was “genre defining” just not in the way I hoped and was expecting given everything that led up to it

Views From The 6ix (2014) DID come out — he just called it IYRTITL

sadly it sucks
eh // it grew on me one day in like... 2017 or 20178 when I was mowing the lawn on a nice day outside
its not that bad

at the time tho! I was one of the people hating calling it mid like everyone else
i will continue to call all his projects after that mid as well
I love Views the way it is but one of its weaker aspects is the IYRTITL style rap tracks.
Imagine Know Yourself in the place of Hype, 6 Man instead of Still Here, No Tellin instead of Grammys and Star67 instead of Pop Style.
still his best album
Imagine the alternate reality where instead of dropping 4 albums in a 2 year period, he focused on making Views a better project comprised of the best tracks from IYRTITL, WATTBA, Views, and More Life. S*** could’ve been even more monumental than it was

Nah
I couldn't image the reality without all 4 of those projects

I'd rather have all those ~60 (most of them at least good) tracks than one 15 track album that maybe would've been received as a classic/magnum Opus in the media

In an ideal world you still get the other tracks, but the best are saved for Views instead of being distributed across multiple projects. Means the other projects would suffer in quality, but the way it panned out Views suffered.
The way music consumption works nowadays though, the way he did it makes more sense.
