Yeah that’s fair. But you feel me it’s the same caliber of artistic greatness. I’d think of putting Kendrick up there but he’s missing something

Kendrick's next album should cement his place tbh if he is really doing a rock inspired album

Why do you care so much if people like Drake? It’s not enough that you like him?

  • May 13, 2020

Once Drake does the 10 track rap album or whatever I will be very satisfied, bet thats down the road though

I’m just saying when weighing an artists entire career it seems more plausible to look at numbers to place him in certain tiers than to look at what this or that guy thinks is a classic. Whatever that word even means nowadays.

    Does that make sense?

I would look at who made the better music

Oh ok I see what you’re saying bro. I think acclaim hold more weight cause a lot of trash go on to sell (6ix9ine). I’m not downing putting up good numbers consistently cause that’s an incredible feat but I’d rather be remembered for my body of work, not sales. But if I could do both >>>

    Yeah definitely

What I mean to say is I think if your an artist and your career is long, 10+ years worth let’s say (whoever it is Jay kanye Em drake Wayne) and you’ve been able to amass great numbers the whole time, obviously you gonna have people who think you got classic albums and people who don’t cuz they hate on you or don’t like you or whatever

But I would say the numbers speak louder than the “classic” deemers if that makes sense

I don’t know maybe I didn’t write OP correctly because it can be about any artist with a long career where they’ve done consistent numbers

TBH, arguing with some of the ppl on here who have never liked him is pointless

Lol what part of OP makes you think I’m worried if people like drake?

artist with classics > artist with sales

Do you think if an artist does numbers consistently for years and years that he doesn’t have people who think he has classics? More than those who think he doesn’t?

It's much better to have a balance. Making art that's hugely popular AND respected>>>being popular yet also being perceived as having no artistic integrity. For example, "Ice, Ice Baby" is a diamond record but no one is has Vanilla Ice in their top 5

You can absolutely use sales as an argument for someone being a legend, but keep in mind that once you do that, you're inadvertently excluding said artist from certain convos. Especially in hip-hop

“Classics” are all based on perception.
Because hip hop views a classic as some sort of nba ring and it’s literally the only genre that treats itself as a sport.

There’s critically acclaimed albums that aren’t considered classics and ones that aren’t as acclaimed yet considered classic.
It’s based on how you perceive it.

So someone saying an artist has 0 classics doesn’t Trump anything because that’s just their opinion.

    Opinions over statistics of course

    Good thoughts I like it

I don’t like the ice ice argument though because I made it clear that you need the longevity. You need to do it for the years and years which vanilla ice absolutely did not

I feel like if you are able to do it for a decade you are almost always popular AND respected. Take Eminem for example. By no means are his latest works anything to think twice about, at least imo, but he did it early in his career for so long that he’s already cemented, respected.

    Great post

That’s what I’m trying to allude to and kinda have people get away from the “no classics” or “5 classics” or whatever it is argument they use to either up or belittle an artist

depends if its just the die hard stans calling it a classic or just haters claiming its not.

either way id prefer listening to artists i enjoy because i like their music and not because they are popular right now

  • May 13, 2020

Pick 1 top 5 song from any artist it's likely to be really good

These "classics" are unbearable to even listen to sometimes

Not everyone care about numbers brah. Some care about the art.

imagine listening to music, i just refresh charts on twitter and make excel sheets
