Hmm I would say you get more out it if you remember it well because Mank shows how Hearst influenced Kane
was gonna watch tonight but i might hold off until i can watch CK again then
thanks
That’s not true tho, we just don’t really remember the garbage that was released in the 40’s 50’s etc. We only remember the classic. Just as ppl will look back to the 10’s in the 2050’s and think wow films were so much better back then.
Yeah to me it’s a disrespectful exaggeration to say he has more talent in his pinky than 99% of current directors. There’s plenty of movies from recent years that I enjoy more than Citizens Kane.
Enjoyable. The old timey camera, fonts and the audio's theatrical mix was a nice touch though it did make the aspect ratio oddly stick out

im not talking about the 40s/50s in general
simply talking about Welles
i think the 10s were a p good decade but the last 2 years have definitely been dreadful

Marriage story
Once upon a time in Hollywood
Peanut butter falcon

Yeah I’ll probably watch it again here soon for the holidays. But yeah man 2019 had a great list of films anyone who denies that clearly didn’t check out the majority of what came out
Seen someone compare this to citizen Kane and hype kind of deflated. Last time I watched CK I fell asleep

I compare this to Roma. It looks nice, but it's boring.
Thought this was brilliant. Dense and really well structured. Reznor and Ross killed it too as expected. Hope Fincher can get back to regularly making films now, too good for hiatuses and funding issues.
And since when did a film have to be wholly accurate to the true events in order to be compelling? Zodiac too took plenty of creative license and adapted a novel that is widely inaccurate and sensationalist, but yet its still a masterpiece of a film. Nobody is bound to tell a story in one set way.
Tried to rewatch this but stopped mid-way to watch Sopranos. I feel like I’m forcing myself to like this film
not as great as it wants to be but still a worth while watch
The movie is technically fantastic, but the whole thing feels soulless in a certain way. Nothing in the film really holds your attention, especially the first half, which has very little relevance to the larger story and mostly functions as an "homage to old hollywood" that I detest in any movie where they try it.
I just find the whole thing weird, because what was this really about? The battle between Welles and Mank only really takes up about 10 minutes of screentime... the main focus of the movie seems to actually be a political campaign and how Mank felt about it, but Mank is just a passive observer. So the plot is: Mank sees issues in the world -> writes Citizen Kane. But what's the point in that when it's pretty clear what real world problems Citizen Kane is reacting against?

I wouldn't say Mank merely a passive observer, he does attempt to persuade people, he also speaks his socialist inclined mind in the company of Hearst, which is something. This was more than I'd probably expect from someone in that circle. He could have done more but as you see during the first chunk of the film, he's no hero, he's a jackass; the day drinking which he can't handle, the flippant belittling of his wife to others, the gambling addiction. I saw it as this, a stylish look at a flawed man who had enough of a moral compass to know what was wrong and although didn't bend the world to fix it, done more than others that were around him at the time.
