I found the new characters a bit more interesting in that arc, I really liked Granolah himself and the ending with the whole “who really the strongest in the universe” was dope

It’s short enough that I don’t mind rewatching it. Never saw it in Japanese so that should be interesting. I like that all of the arcs are basically like the series confronting its history. It’s a little messy cap on everything. I think Super is overall a better continuation of the manga, but GT was weirdly fitting for the anime at the time. It’s sort of melancholy seeing everybody so old. Dragon Ball one of the only Shonen concerned with the passage of time. The main orchestral theme always makes me sad.

Yeah skipping the first 13-18 episodes GT is a ok rewatch. SSJ4 saves the hell out of the show. But I agree with you on it like the characters basically facing their past situations. It's just poorly written.

I actually don’t mind those episodes. I like the adventure element of early Dragon Ball and even if it’s a failed attempt to recreate that stuff well, I still have some fun with it.

I’ve been going back through all of Dragon Ball but in Japanese for the first time. The early stuff is still my favorite, but I do enjoy the insane escalation of the later material. Great thing about the filler in the anime is the way they flesh out the downtime and fill in the gaps between major time jumps. You get a better sense of Toriyama’s world. I don’t like Super as much as some people, but Toyotarou does seem to be improving as an artist and storyteller. I will catch up with the new arcs once I’m done getting through the OG, Z, and even GT. Currently on the 22nd Tenka-Ichi Budōkai arc.

Nah those first 1-18 episodes are an awful slog to get through. I love the original DB, but GT attempt at it wasn't good. Making Pan the damsel in distress every episode and the dancing segments was out of control. Even the writers for the show regret even making those episodes. Super anime started bad but they wasn't "I wish we didn't go that route" bad.

same. OG DB > Z > Super > GT.

Toriyama's world is quite colorful. I think it's actually what makes a lot of the drama in Z work so well. However, I'd agree that it gets a bit too "serious" then. Especially around the Cell arc.

as for Super, Toyo is definitely improving quite a bit and the last two arcs are two of the Top 3 best Super arcs imo with Moro being #1. GT has it's merits too tbf.

I think my major complaint would be that many of these episodes are reatively poor carbon copies of the Pilaf arc.
