I really enjoy Honestly Nevermind
Massive is one of my favorite songs of 2022. I have so many posts about it.
I find that the album sounds repetitive and unfinished though. Both can be true.
I just want Drake to be better.
Your opinion is your opinion king
Likewise
its all in good fun
Btw I had my music Nazi era before, I used to think quite similarly to you tbh
Then I realized I don't gaf about rules and what's supposed to be this or that or the technical criteria of a classic (which is still subjective anyway)
That s*** ain't a fun way to engage with the culture imo
Music culture is a living breathing thing and as soon as we hold onto standards that were set based on music culture of the past we've missed the point
Music is now
Art is now
Drake is a creative genius at the peak of his powers NOW
Not Prince or The Beach Boys or Kanye West
They've had their time and its over now
We can remember their music fondly but otherwise I'm focused on what's happening right now
Mfer said I’m in a Music Nazi phase because Drake makes watered down garbage meant for background listening, I can’t with this site

This the most music Nazi post I’ve ever seen tho no cap
Peeped the other thread and OP want people to take his opinion serious lock thread delete OP off the face of the earth
Sales ain't everything but CONSISTENT numbers don't lie
Sure you can explain away a flash in the pan artist or 1 hit wonder as an industry plant etc but people have been gravitating to this mans music for over a decade now
Pretty much all of it will be "remembered" just as well as goats of the past
The people who love Drake's music now (and that's a lot of people) aren't just going to suddenly catch amnesia 20 years from now lol
People out here making memories and living with this music
Just because some of ya'll can't get into it for some reason or your favorite music critic nerd doesn't get it doesn't make it any less impactful for those who do get it. Again, a lot of people get it and will hold it in high regard forever.
I get what you’re saying, but saying something isn’t a classic doesn’t mean we’re saying that it will be forgotten.
When people talk about Drake’s career as a whole in 30-40-50 years from now the albums they’re gonna bring up are everything from 2009-2015, and probably Views because of how huge it was. They’re obviously gonna talk about his numbers and huge singles on every project but when they bring up his defining albums, it’s more than likely gonna be TC-NWTS-IYRTITL. Does that mean there aren’t millions of people who enjoy Views/ML/Scorpion/CLB/Her Loss and have made memories with them? Of course not.
Same way that there are millions of people who enjoy Invincible by MJ, but that’s not one of his defining works when his name gets brought up. People talk about Off the Wall, Thriller, and Bad and probably Dangerous as the essential (aka classic) MJ albums.
Same way millions of people enjoy Donda and Ye by Kanye, but they aren’t seen as “essential” Kanye records, and won’t be in the future. Those would be CD, LR, Graduation, 808s, MBDTF. Kanye has a lot but he’s a rare exception because of how stylistically different all of his projects are. What you get on 808s you can’t get on CD, what you get on CD you can’t get on MBDTF, so on and so forth. Drake’s projects don’t vary by style too drastically, they just become more and more modern as his career has progressed.
Classics for artists are generally regarded by the projects that released in their creative peak. Stevie in the 70s, MJ/Prince in the 80s, Ye in the 2000s, etc. Drake’s creative peak is widely regarded to be between 2009-2015, and some would argue 2009-2016 which is fair. That’s not saying everything he’s released has been garbage since then or isn’t worth listening to, but most people are of the opinion that he has passed his creative prime.
Her Loss is not an “essential” Drake record, it’s just really enjoyable, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Not every single project has to be a classic and not every single enjoyable project is a classic. Most artists don’t have more than 3-4, and the ones that have many are the absolute legendary among legendary.
Hear this too often but now the Views love has come back around. Idgaf man enjoy what you like a majority of people on here won’t agree with you. While “hip-hop twitter” would it’s forever gonna be subjective it’s just a matter of who makes the most noise about it. I’m sure there are parts people can agree with on both sides.

I agree with some of this but artist release classics outside they prime all the time. Hov prime was 98-03 but he still blessed us with classics after that such as AG in 07, WTT in 11, 444 in 17
Y’all can’t just dead the nigga Drake as a quality album artist just because he may not be in his “prime” anymore (which is subjective anyway)
And where you getting this “most people” from lol?
Me, my homies, my baby momma, Kevin Durant and Peter Rosenberg all think Her Loss a classic 100% and could give you an intelligent argument as to why. Definitely one of the most “essential” records in his catalog
Why should you or a sour ass critic like Melon’s opinion hold more weight than ours?
Also can we stop listing out old classics from other artist, they really have nothing to do with the conversation

1. American Gangster is a great album, wouldn’t call it a classic. WTT is a collab album from the two biggest rappers in the world at their peak, and there’s numerous iconic singles on there, so sure that’s a classic but it’s not a solo. And 4:44 is an outlier in Jay’s discography so it stands out.
2. Most discussions I engage in whether it be online or in real life regarding Drake, most people say that they haven’t liked his current projects as much as they did before 2015/2016. Genuinely, the only time I’ve seen someone argue that Her Loss is/will be a classic has been on this website in the Drake section.
3. What is it about Her Loss that makes it “essential”? How does it stand out in his discography? It’s a solid rap album that’s fun and doesn’t take itself too seriously, I honestly don’t know how you can consider that a classic that stands against his other arguable classics like Take Care, NWTS, IYRTITL, or even Views (even though I disagree on this one) because of how monumental it was for his career. Her Loss isn’t a groundbreaking artistic statement, it’s not wildly popular (for Drake standards), there’s nothing innovative about it that’ll make it become super influential in the future… it’s just a really, really solid collab album that’s fun and enjoyable to listen to. What makes it standout as “essential”?
An essential record to me is a record that, when looking over an artist’s career or trying to understand who they were as an artist, HAS to be brought up in the discussion to paint the picture and get a better understanding of said artist. Drake’s story can be told very completely without Her Loss ever being mentioned.

“ collab album from the two biggest rappers in the world at their peak”
Hov was 10 years past his peak stop it
And HL is a classic for the same reason WTT a classic imo
A pretty much flawless and highly entertaining collab album from two of the biggest rappers today, easily among the best collab albums in rap history (not better than WTT but that don’t mean it’s not classic)
Drake’s rapping is arguably among the best rapping of his career on HL. His verses may not be “deep” or “introspective” but in terms of flow, rhyme schemes, wittiness, versatility and creativity with the raps and just overall being an entertaining great sounding rapper HL is an absolute MASTERCLASS
Production on HL among the best of his career
HL arguably the best rapping 21 has ever done
I feel like you be writing the album off just because it’s not some drastic artistic statement or something lol Plenty classics are not like that bruh WTT included, it’s just extremely skillfully made yet fun music
Side note: AG def a classic, Only concept album from Hov, amazing rapping and production, cohesive, companion piece to the American Gangster movie, closest thing we are gonna get to a RD sequel showing the downfall of a hustler, one of his most soulful albums up there with Blueprint in terms of soulful production.

Bro stop it the production on Her Loss is not among the best of his career
Many of those beats are very simple slightly generic modern rap instrumentals, Drake himself is what elevates the album.
And no, Her Loss and Watch the Throne are not on the same level.
Drake & 21 don’t have anywhere near the chemistry that Ye and Jay had on that album, and not a single instrumental is as iconic or as good as beats like No Church in the Wild, Niggas in Paris, or Otis.
I enjoy pretty much every song on Her Loss but it’s definitely not flawless, it’s just really really solid. Just Drake and 21 having fun for 16 tracks.
The most impressive thing about it is Drake’s rapping. 21 feels like an afterthought on most of the project, which is why I can’t rate it too highly as a collab album. (Also, his rapping was not the best he’s ever done, Savage Mode II is still his career peak as far as rapping goes.)
The production is solid but it’s very standard and you wouldn’t look twice at most of those beats if a lesser rapper was rapping over them (most of them not all of them).
And I’m not writing it off because it’s not some artistic statement, IYRTITL isn’t really an artistic statement either but I rate that album very highly. I’m not writing it off at all, I’ve said plenty of times that I enjoy Her Loss a ton.
It just seems that for Drake stans on this site there is no in-between, if someone doesn’t think a Drake project is a classic then they must think it’s garbage

Not one beat on HL is "generic" so idk what to tell you there my boy
You must just hate trap or something because that's what most of the production is
Trap doesn't automatically = generic, that's some elitist s***. There is such a thing as great trap production just like there is such a thing as great boom bap, great sample based production, etc
I do feel like the album is 70/30 in Drake's favor, only legit critique I've heard from you so far but I don't think it hurts the album at all tbh

I don’t hate trap at all, I’ve called several users out on here before for being elitist towards trap. Some of my favorite rappers of all time are trap artists.
But I’m sure you understand that generic production can exist in any genre or sub genre. There is such a thing as generic trap beats, as there is such a thing as generic boom bap beats. Trap beats I would consider generic are beats made with cheap/overused sounds, lazy drum patterns, repetitive & basic piano melodies, etc.
I never claimed that trap automatically = generic, you jumped to that conclusion.
All I’m saying is that most of the trap production on Her Loss is pretty standard, and Drake is what makes the songs pop. I guarantee you wouldn’t look twice at those beats if it was a much lesser artist rapping over them, or even if it was a 21 solo record

I disagree
Drake raping is def the center of attention but the beats caught me first tbh
Love the samples, arrangements, and switch ups on this album
Beats are one of the best things about HL
*Drake rapping lol
