Ops right however people mistake specificity for depth, Drake doesn’t speak on highly specific experiences like Earl but he still hits the same level of depth if not more.

9/Gods Plan/Nice For What/etc.. are as deep as any Earl song, Drake is just coming from a different angle. Drake is trying to find the links that connect everyone together while Earl is looking for the few people who can understand his language. Opposite approaches, one is descriptive, other is prescriptive. More on that eventually.

Lines like "I feel good, sometimes I don't" & "Tryna keep it peaceful is a struggle for me" break the human experience down to its most fundamental levels, exposing core feelings we all share. Communicating those feelings in a way that resonates with billions takes a deep understanding of emotions and knowing how to leave enough space for listeners to exist. Stepping aside and leaving space for listeners is the most critical part, because you have to eschew the specificities of your own experience and allow the feeling to exist in and of itself. This type of depth is deceptively simple but drake prioritizes BEING deep over APPEARING deep.

I've never really personally connected to Earl's music, but I understand the mindset, and that offers it's own level of appreciation. Still, Drake's popular sound should never be mistaken for lack of texture or specificity. There's a reason his best work lingers, and it isn't just because it's popular.

No he's not. Connecting with people doesn't mean you're deep. That's not what deep means.

i interpreted it as op speaking on emotional depth

being less specific lyrically leaves the listener room to travel in their own minds by connecting dots with their own personal experiences, making it an experience of emotional depth for a wider range of people

the key to this, however, is to provide the listener with the “rabbit hole” aka a seemingly vague line that can trigger a certain more specific memory of the listener, or just allow them to draw their own conclusions of what it means, resulting in a deeper emotional experience

for example, the line “i feel good sometimes i dont“, can trigger a memory in the listener’s head of a hard time they went through, like a loved one of theirs passing away. Maybe this line will help them come to terms with the reality that balance must exist in this world, and that with the bad times there will also be great memories that make it all worth it

They connect these dots themselves and it helps one to personally invest themselves in the song, this is why you see people have such an emotional attachment to certain artists who go about their songwriting in this way. To me that is most certainly depth

i would disagree with op in the sense that i believe earl implements this songwriting style at times as well, and drake also implements a much more specific style of storytelling at times

drake actually does a really interesting thing where he will start out a verse super specific and personal, then fade out to the more open style that i have previously discussed, only to come to the end of the verse by bringing it full-circle back to that specific style. Too Much is a perfect example of this
