no one but the artist alone decides "what needs to be said", there isn't a too much or too abstract
i, as a consumer of their art, can only decide if the way they chose to bring emotion on paper resonates with me or not
didnt say anything about too much or too abstract
diff between vague & simple vs saying what needs to be said & nothing more is a choice that the artist would make yeah
you dont decide to resonate with something, you either do or you dont imo. its an unconscious thing
Well what exactly makes someone more deep?
Seems kinda stupid no matter who you think is deeper tbfh.
gotta think about this
People mistake specificity for depth, Drake doesn’t speak on highly specific experiences like Earl but he still hits the same level of depth if not more.
9/Gods Plan/Nice For What/etc.. are as deep as any Earl song, Drake is just coming from a different angle. Drake is trying to find the links that connect everyone together while Earl is looking for the few people who can speak his language. Opposite approaches, one is descriptive, other is prescriptive. More on that eventually.
Lines like "I feel good, sometimes I don't" & "Tryna keep it peaceful is a struggle for me" break the human experience down to its most fundamental levels, exposing core feelings we all share. Communicating those feelings in a way that resonates with billions takes a deep understanding of emotions and knowing how to leave enough space for listeners to exist. Stepping aside and leaving space for listeners is the most critical part, because you have to eschew the specificities of your own experience and allow the feeling to exist in and of itself. This type of depth is deceptively simple but drake prioritizes BEING deep over APPEARING deep.
"Can't get me on the line so they hang me out to dry for it" vs "fishy niggas stick to eating off of hooks"
Dumb
there definitely is a limit to subjectivity and inherent worth in the world of art.
In a lot of the cases we’re talking about in mainstream music there’s little attempt to put something truly substantial in the air and instead it’s just completely ordinary and lackadaisical language being used with nothing beyond it. There’s no effort, there’s no intimacy. What is the worth to it then? What really gives it worth compared to what you’re hearing in a conversational context? There’s nothing.
from a ground level there isnt much depth to mainstream music but if you made a top 20 list of the most popular artists ever they'd all be artists who put a lot of substance in their music
i think there was some value to Drake's persona before his rebrand as a tough guy
"Drake confirms that the street-strutting bad boy “just looking for head in a comfortable bed,” is the other face of the desperately alone little boy lost crying to his mommy substitute. The boasting brute is always on the run from the helpless infant inside, but, for that very reason, the emotionally broken-down male isn’t an alternative to all the ego-armor posturing, so much as it is its enabling condition. Women are to be publicly disdained, treated as currency in a homosocial bragging economy; in private they are asked to make these wounded men whole again. Is there a track that has exposed the real nature of the male-to-female love song better than Take Care‘s “Marvin’s Room”? The conceit—a drunk Drake leaving a phone message to a long lost love he treated badly but now thinks he wants back—leaves us in no doubt that he was speaking to himself via a fantasized female Other."
great post
I mean yea definitely and drake is the complete opposite. he constantly needs to appeal to that wide audience which is why he won't lock down on a single sound and won't go niche lyrically
its just different ends of the spectrum
basically what i was trying to say

Man no wonder our society is so f***ed if they hold this clown as their modern philosopher

how many people even know about Mark Fisher
unless you're thinking Zizek

yeah, i didn't mean you literally decide to resonate lol, it's just the only thing here that's in your hands, unconscious = you as well
i get what you mean but the phrase what needs to be said just doesn't sit right with me when discussing art
Dumb
lmao explain why you think so, op is at least discussing s*** in his own thread

true true
with "needs to be said" i mean it in the sense of when you're inspired to create and you create something, "need" would be the thing that drives you to create
Man just keep this s*** in ur sxn where u weirdos can circlejerk in peace

Man called Nice For What deep
"Me sad me bored wearing mask hard" breaks the experience of the average American in 2020 down to its barest essentials. Where's my Nobel?

Fischer was spitting facts with that post, and he’s pretty niche so the idea that he’s widely thought of as this generations greatest philosopher is ridiculous

pretty sure drake got a grammy for it
A lot of drake’s earlier s*** resonates with me pretty hard, so I see where OP’s coming from, but if that’s the metric you’re using to measure “depth” then earl wins off the strength of solace alone
