no one but the artist alone decides "what needs to be said", there isn't a too much or too abstract

i, as a consumer of their art, can only decide if the way they chose to bring emotion on paper resonates with me or not

People mistake specificity for depth, Drake doesn’t speak on highly specific experiences like Earl but he still hits the same level of depth if not more.

9/Gods Plan/Nice For What/etc.. are as deep as any Earl song, Drake is just coming from a different angle. Drake is trying to find the links that connect everyone together while Earl is looking for the few people who can speak his language. Opposite approaches, one is descriptive, other is prescriptive. More on that eventually.

Lines like "I feel good, sometimes I don't" & "Tryna keep it peaceful is a struggle for me" break the human experience down to its most fundamental levels, exposing core feelings we all share. Communicating those feelings in a way that resonates with billions takes a deep understanding of emotions and knowing how to leave enough space for listeners to exist. Stepping aside and leaving space for listeners is the most critical part, because you have to eschew the specificities of your own experience and allow the feeling to exist in and of itself. This type of depth is deceptively simple but drake prioritizes BEING deep over APPEARING deep.

there definitely is a limit to subjectivity and inherent worth in the world of art.

In a lot of the cases we’re talking about in mainstream music there’s little attempt to put something truly substantial in the air and instead it’s just completely ordinary and lackadaisical language being used with nothing beyond it. There’s no effort, there’s no intimacy. What is the worth to it then? What really gives it worth compared to what you’re hearing in a conversational context? There’s nothing.

i think there was some value to Drake's persona before his rebrand as a tough guy

I mean yea definitely and drake is the complete opposite. he constantly needs to appeal to that wide audience which is why he won't lock down on a single sound and won't go niche lyrically

diff between vague & simple vs saying what needs to be said & nothing more is a choice that the artist would make yeah

you dont decide to resonate with something, you either do or you dont imo. its an unconscious thing
