you can write in drums patterns and chord progressions based on grid lines, not necessarily play them live. it’s almost fool proof to create beats nowadays. but those who excel have innate rhythm in my opinion. although it can be learned too.
Smh I know exactly what you talking bout. “Oh ima click my mouse and put a kick here and click and put a snare there”
So that’s because usually niggas can’t play it out on a beatpad?
Do you guys usually have an order you like to stick to when doing drums? Like I usually like to start with hihats/snares then work my way down to the kicks and 808s
Usually kicks and snares at same time to get the groove.
Then sample
Then bass to make sure the key of the bass matches the sample
then hi hat
Personally sample first
Or if im not sampling then the basic chords first, then drums, then flesh out the rest of the melody
Arguing over this is pointless tho lmao

Smh fr. There’s literally no right or wrong answer.
I was hoping more these dumb dumbs would give examples of producers who sample first rather than getting in they feelings lol

it's pointless but i like the discussion
i learn a lot about production from you guys just talking about it

It’s for sure a healthy thing to discuss and grasp new ideas on how others process works but for some reason alotta people in here getting worked up over people doing drums first
if you have rhythm you can follow the groove of the drum beat while playing keys/chopping samples. it’s like an advanced metronome.
I’m still tryna understand how someone couldn’t play drums or whatever on a beat pad when there’s a metronome there to guide you on the tempo
Kanye: Sample first
I’m pretty sure this is right, I’ll add to OP but any source?
I start with melody most of the time, but if I think of a really groovy drum pattern I’ll build from that
When sampling I like drums first, well at least place holder drums. But with original stuff, I like melody first.

Not that I can link you too, but Pusha-T has talked about how Ye listen thru hours of music to find the samples for the album he produces.
He talked about it in a Daytona interview where he said Ye found Teyana Taylors album while they where away working on Pusha album.
There is also an old video of Ye chopping up a sample in the studio, no drums
I start with drums when i wanna make a rhythm oriented track.
And i start with a Melody/sample for when im doing something more atmospheric, I dont think about it in the moment tho. it depends. And doesnt really matter at the end of the day
I just can’t get my melody quite right when I do drums first like I at least write a lead first
I make a melody then structure the drums around that it would be weird the other way around me
