Do you guys usually have an order you like to stick to when doing drums? Like I usually like to start with hihats/snares then work my way down to the kicks and 808s
I do Kik and snare/perc/clap etc first, then everything else comes later.
Some times i do all the drums right there but sometimes i gotta lay down a melody/ flip before i go further wit the drums.
No. What made you think that?
Because he has an amazing ear for samples I thought he just kinda builds the drums over them
Not that I can link you too, but Pusha-T has talked about how Ye listen thru hours of music to find the samples for the album he produces.
He talked about it in a Daytona interview where he said Ye found Teyana Taylors album while they where away working on Pusha album.
There is also an old video of Ye chopping up a sample in the studio, no drums
For sure you right
Drums are weird like I can’t imagine in my head how the song will sound like with just the drums but I can with the melody

Lol having an amazing ear doesn’t change the order tho.
For guys like that it usually goes they’ll dig through the crates and find an amazing sample. And then before chopping it they’ll play out some drums so they can chop the sample over those drums
But I can link an interview about his process if you want

Now that I think about it you can just watch Rhythm Roulette and see how they work
So far ITT most examples point to big producers doing drums first.
Also ITT KTT users claiming that method is wrong and makes no sense
Lmao.
I think I got it it’s drums first if you working with MPC
When you MPC you mean beatpad? Cus 9th using a Maschine in that video
The legend doing drums first

Madlib discusses his process and doing drums first always

Great find btw. This essentially the process for most sample based producer
They dig through vinyls til they find the one
They set up the drums to get the groove
Then they chop the sample over the drums

I learned a lot about producing from this series
Weirdest I’ve seen was Oh No who chose to sample cassettes and said it’s what he prefers
Bassline first
Depends. I think that the drums are more essential than anything when it comes to Trap beats because they usually don't have much of a melody. Everything else should start with the melody and go from there

You say that tho as if most sample/boom bap producers don’t do drums first.
Lol there’s no rules bruh
For those of you who swear you know more than the actual artist making careers out of music.
@5 min mark
“I start with the music first before the drum programming which is very unorthodox because most hip hop producers start with the drum programming first”
Obviously there’s no rules to making music but I’m highly surprised by how many of y’all are saying s*** like “doing drums first makes no sense” “you should only do drums first if it’s trap only that”
It’s like y’all sit here and invent your own rules of what you think is the “correct way” even tho it contradicts what most professionals are doing. Doing things your way is perfectly fine but stop acting like it’s a rule and any other way is pointless
