most of gambino’s output is rap, it’s just that his biggest projects after he blew tf up (2016 and onward) aren’t. if you were around in the late blog era gambino’s improvement from 12-14 was one of the frequent talking points, Royalty and STN MTN were big tapes and bro was rapping his ass off, bro’s biggest song is him mumbling this is america over a trap beat w thug and savage adlibs, get the f*** outta here man

i despise when niggas talk s*** and don’t know what the f*** they’re talking about. nigga not even a good hater

  • Jul 10, 2024

literally an entire Gangsta Grillz tape showing how much he’s tapped into hiphop culture

R O Y A L T Y was on the front page of DatPiff for like a year and reached over 100,000 downloads on there but go off, king.

And people still forgets it exits

Also had tons of up and coming or still underground talent all over it

He's definitely apart of hip-hop culture lol I swear man nigga's make one R&B/soul and suddenly everybody forgets you were a rapper for decade prior

A lot these old heads have the mentality of if a rapper doesn’t make rap 100% of the time then their not really HipHop which is a stupid take

All these old niggas do is run their mouths like b****es it’s so annoying idk who this content is for tbh

Over-saturation of podcasts, everybody and their momma has hours of them speaking in a comfy cozy room with a mic every week. Then it gets clipped and is content filler for people like us to talk about for a few days, s*** is depressing lmao

Same old niggas who will say Andre 3000 is a top 5 rapper despite him doing much more than rap, and then never even release a solo rap album.

How do we feel about the Doja Cat comparison, though?

Some of u, do not answer this question, u know who u are

But I’m honestly curious, because I could definitely understand someone not calling Doja Cat hip hop culture even though she raps well a good amount, would be weird. But not calling Bino hip hop feels equally weird

doja is a rapper and part of rap culture and anyone who says otherwise is just arguing in bad faith

if we counting pre-IYRT Drake (and we are) then there’s truly v little difference

Word, yeah I expected this as well. Truthfully I don’t know much about Doja and only know her come up as far as B**** I’m a Cow -> Say So -> Woman

I’m assuming she has a decent amount of hip hop projects before her success? And I’m not saying she doesn’t rap, but it seems this conversation is centered around the idea that some rapping is not enough to be considered hip hop culture

Also, this is coming from someone who would love a Doja rap album, so no bad faith here

I peeped the full quote and his actual stance, this why I f***ing hate clips man

He was saying Gambino didn’t start out as hiphop (idk, I slightly disagree because of Culdesac). He didn’t say why, but probably the comedy type of music and sketches s*** he was doing on YouTube. He said he pivoted to hiphop during that royalty/stn mnt/BTI phase but then pivoted back to non-hiphop s*** right after. That’s where the Doja comparison is coming from. Use it when it’s advantageous, pivot out of it when you’re on and also how they carry themselves

The white guy (surprisingly) was offering really good pushback, which is kinda sad to say lmaooo

  • Jul 10, 2024

    He is not wrong

He is not Hip Hop culture

    He is MUSIC culture

Nobody knows Donald more for his comedy, didn’t he only have like 1 special and it was ass?

That special was good but yeah he was never more well known as comedian than as a musician

Nigga hopped on Tim Westwood and produced a beat on the spot and freestyled. But apparently he's not "hip-hop culture" to Elliot Wilson.

Got Ghostface and RZA on the same tape

    An ATL rap posse cut

Nigga even on a Funk Flex mixtape

  • Free YoungBoy

Drake raps every year. Even if he doesn’t write it he’s still making rap music.

The last time gambino rapped fr in the last 5 years was a feature with Latto

He just rapped this year with Kanye?

Yeah, he started out as frat rap

He never been a frat rapper

His early early stuff like Sick Boi or Poindexter was definitely Nerdcore style hip-hop.

Like nigga had MC Chris on there

Doja did start rapping. But then she took a hiatus and switched to pop rap.

Plus her fanbase is more pop.

Binos fanbase is still majority rap fans

It's unfortunate but I hate both those subgenres. Love what Bino and Mac turned into though
