this was pretty all over the place. some cool stuff, had a very fun time but doesn't really come together that well and tries really hard to be depraved, visceral, shocking but comes across a bit like a talented 19 year old student getting to make their first script. incredibly shot & designed sequences with bad dialogue & corny themes

felt like a combination of The Idol, Succession S1 finale with Kendall and the waiter, Don't Worry Darling, Last Night in Soho, Midsommar, Call Me By Your Name.

also if you wanna spoil what are some of the just lame attempts at provocative scenes. i feel like you get a good sense of the film with these lmfao

barry keoghan slurping the liquid and licking a drain that has c\*\*\*+ bath water in it

barry keoghan fingering a girl on her period, wiping it all over her lips and his face and saying 'i dont mind....im a vampire...'

barry keoghan making a land-pussy out of the soil on top of a grave & silently having s\*\*\*with the hole

This is like when babylon came out except I’m on the opposite side
    I didn’t f*** with this heavy
The cinematography and the acting are highlights, but by the second act it’s trying waaaay too hard to be shocking and provocative. And the story takes a nosedive from being intriguing and funny to pretty much soap opera levels of writing. Im leaning toward a 6/10 but I did like a decent amount of it so maybe a 7/10

So… I like how the film starts, first 30 minutes or so really pull you in but by the time we get towards the end??

Ended up feeling how so-so I was with Promising Young Woman.

Felt the same way. It’s trying too hard, wants to be artistic but then the plot quickly unravels into something far too familiar.

I saw one review on Letterboxd that summed it up well: it’s destined to be one of those movies that goes viral on TikTok or Twitter and be “babies first” disturbing movie. like it’s screaming “look how f***ed up this movie is!” When it’s legit hollow. It’s wild how much the film sinks the longer it goes on. And yeah that ending is laughably bad. I know people gave s*** to babylon for its provocative scenes but that felt so much more substantial then anything in this.
Sucks cause there’s great acting and cinematography to be had but the bad outweighs the good the more I think about it

If you didn’t fw that movie you’ll most likely hate this cause it’s trying real hard to do the same shock gimmick but with a significantly worse story

    My review:

Okay look, there’s some good stuff about this film. The cinematography, the acting from Barry and Rosamund, the score… but my issue is this film WANTS to be provocative. It WANTS to shock you, disgust you, and unsettle you but I think it fails because the shock, the provocation, it essentially means nothing. The film’s plot and themes begins to unravel when we have 30 minutes left and that’s when it gets weird. The tone is off and things stop becoming believable very quickly. Idk about this one, kind of have the same “empty” feeling I had with Promising Young Woman.

Beautiful to look at and Jacob Elordi is cool.

I don’t mind the shock, I just think Damien tried to do too much and stuff too much s*** into the film. I would’ve loved a simple version of Margot’s character struggling to adjust from silent films to talkies. Rather than expanding over so many years.

But in general I tend to not like films that expands over many many years, I prefer more focused in stories on a specific small time frame
