you can make a critic bait album that flops honestly critic bait is a hater ass term but it’s a real thing
Actually go ahead and give me an example of a critic bait album that flopped and why
Barter 6, Flockaveli, and Culture were highly reviewed. WLR was mixed
my mistake i remember there being haters
it’s one of those 90’s double albums that have a ton of filler
You gonna need more than a personal opinion for such an objective statement about an album that beloved with so many classic songs on it

The big day chance the rapper

nah all eyez on me has classics i didn’t say it’s bad but it’s a good album that’s upheld as a seminal classic if it was 12 tracks it would be top 2 of his

off top the big day by chance i gotta think it over tho im legit in a zoom meeting with my camera off
and why
Always had this problem in school i dont wanna explain but i know im right
critic bait is definitely more prominent in the movie industry because of the nature of studios and their budgeting. oscar bait is a valid characteristic of some movies because movies are being made to be appealing to various audiences. theres rarely if ever a consumer group for music albums
RMR feels like critic bait music (still like that Rascal song though) but i can’t think of many artists who give that vibe
you could say an artist who tries to appeal to another artist’s fanbase with their music is technically critic bait following the logic in your post though
so someone like YBN Nahmir, whose entire marketing tactic was having meme pages post “is this the new Tay-K?”, could be considered making critic bait music
and why
you have chance doing those weird grunts and the different voices and some choir in the back while he’s talking about family and stuff which nirmally makes critics go “wow such soulful production, a man being vulnerable 10/0” but ultimately everyone s*** on it

No I’m asking why did they s*** on it?

that’s more biting and riding waves which is more frowned upon than bait

Was he trying make that for critics
Felt like he just ignored everyone’s advice for that album and just made whatever he felt like while in a honeymoon phase of his relationship
Feels like the music he’s making now would align more closely with “critic bait”
The only common denominator between all the albums listed ITT is that the artist was actually aiming for a theme, cohesive listen, etc.
No I’m asking why did they s*** on it?
because all of it was a veneer on an album that ultimately wasn’t enjoyable to listen to

So you’re saying Chance made a bad album and people didn’t enjoy it?

yeah it’s got critic bait and they didn’t bite idk what point you’re trying to make

But in my honest opinion when i hear critic bait i think of him Childish Gambino and Mr Morale the album
Lin-Manuel Miranda being a white-passing Puerto Rican making the corniest s*** you’ve ever heard & marketing it as a groundbreaking rap musical about the US’s history
also doesn’t help that he just glossed over the fact that white people were racist as s*** to anyone darker than him during that era, and he decided to tell their story through rap
everything about it rubs me the wrong way

How old were you when the musical debuted? That was like the main selling point of it, it definitely wasn’t glossed over it was quite literally the crux of the musicals existence. And it’s also touched on plenty throughout the musical itself.

This doesn’t even hold up as a “critic bait” thing tho
They say Future isn’t critic bait but a majority of his albums also follow this
music that sounds like you arent smart enough to listen to it
i told someone i liked MBDTF more than mr morale and got told i was too stupid to understand mr morale like okay mr redditor
