I wouldn't be so sure about this.

Remember it was just last year when Antonio Banderas was being championed in the film press as the only non-white actor nominee. They might just go full dumbass and deem italians as a minority racial group.

I really just don’t see how the Oscars see everybody s***ting on them for awarding Green Book and snubbing Beale Street in the same year and decide the problem is that we need more stories about minority problems

Then again the Oscars probably doing this cuz they want to feel like they’re curing racism watching another white out of touch filmmaker/producer talk for minorities

They probably just got worried that they might not seem diverse enough after several years in a row of having multiple, millionaire white women preach about wage equality. So they just laid this groundwork to ensure there will be similar moments of "activism" given by a celebrity from every minority group.

Truly incredible how Hollywood producers have spent the past ~50 years helping to turn the 3 majors international festivals into corporate insider trading golf retreats, and actively passed on acquiring the rights of hundreds of incredibly diverse films screened there over that time period — or in some cases (e.g., Disney/Miramax) bought the distribution rights of some of the more beloved ones in order to make sure they never saw the light of day in America to restrain audience choice.

And now they have insulted the intelligence of moviegoers everywhere by proclaiming these quota commandments to be the answer to the diversity problem.

So crazy how Cannes, Berlin, and Venice have gone decades without the absurd amount of representational disparity found in Hollywood — and all of those festivals have been infamous for their strict eligibility rules (headline industry news in recent years even)...yet not one of them dictates anything related to diversity.

It's almost as if the Academy is incredibly desperate and will do literally anything to keep tween social media activists singing their praises

A3 is the worst of these tbh

    You’re literally stifling creativity

Imagine someone making a groundbreaking amazing film only to not qualify because it doesn’t meet a diversity plot standard

A1 and A2 are fine with me, let’s more POC get meaningful work

Virtually every single film that would normally be eligible for an Oscar, can still be eligible under these rules — nearly every film in Hollywood qualifies 2 and 4 regularly. The other two are the "smoke but no fire" qualifications, because as long as 2 and 4 exist, nothing actually needs to change in order to be eligible.

In other words: these requirements are just a giant meaningless gesture that preys on superficial reactions towards the two "hot topic" requirements to bank the Academy/Hollywood some good publicity

This is so dumb. You don't need to do anybody a favour. If a film is good then nominate it. Simple as. But that's not what award shows are about

I want to produce a reality show starring you, where I pay for you to spend 3 weeks traveling across Spain, and have cameras to catch your reactions and comments like "man there sure are a whole lot of the white tourists everywhere who speak fluent Spanish" in reference to the locals who have lived in that country for many generations.

Or are you one of those "colonial race science but woke" people who see tan skin on people living on the Mediterranean and automatically assume they aren't white because "darker skin than britains = not white"?

Guess the conquistadors killing first peoples in the americas was just minority on minority crime too

Tl;dr - even the film press wrote apology headlines for referring to Antonio Banderas as non-white

I’m all for diversity but placing any sort of requirement/restriction is stupid to me, whether it’s 2 or all of them. I can name quite a few movies that were nominated in the past that deserved to be which didn’t include anything from these criterias. Now filmmakers will force it in their movies just so they have a chance or winning an Oscar. What a load of bs

Hispanic isn't a race. Its a made up term the US started using to equalize every ethnic background in latin america that spain influenced, and then lumps in nationally spanish people, to create unnecessary census categories.

There are hispanics that are white, latino, and black.
