They didn't even play the drums or synthesize them or anything themselves though it can get into lazy territory when using someone else's work if they don't do much else with those samples

The point is, we all knew the sample of the songs. Ie Geto Boys and Isaac Hayes, Camp Lo sampling Dynasty. Kanye sampling Curtis Mayfield or Michael Jackson on Good Life.

We know where the sample originates from so it's not a surprise bc it's homage to our culture.

i dont understand why this is such a hot topic for some of you or why you're so offended if things like this didn't happen music or any art would never grow. It's apart of experimenting.
And if you wanna go that route of straight copying in the same genre do you guys realize how many soul singers sounded exactly like eddie kendricks in the 60s and 70s?

taking portions from another genre and creating new music from that his how art grows. Stop being babies about it.

I mean hip-hop does this too. Hip-hop ripped drum breaks from oldies for years.

Quincy only recently said that Michael Jackson stole a lot of songs, including Billie Jean from Donna Summers

there are way more stories like this than you realize

Black culture and Chicano culture on the West Coast also influenced each other heavily.

I've been thinking about making a thread about this.

  • this woulda been cool when nirvana did it... lol this classic white s*** "u know thats African right yeh yeh completely I was ripping tht s*** off all the time... I have a s*** ton of money from it nd didn't have to really compensate or even acknowledge it initially cus it would've took away from how original ppl viewed us but now its cool because im old as s*** and yeh have all this money n this will in no way mar my standing as a originalist n stuff so yeah man, its African hahaha yup"

It's not about copying within the same genre. That's going to happen. Your neighbor might have the same car as u type s***.

It's about completely stealing from one genre/culture and profiting, receiving creative praise as if these drummers & overrated bands are hot s***.

People don't even know how dope Gap Band and Charlie Wilson truly are but Nirvana gets these accolades...

    Mint Condition too

  • Jul 2, 2021

Drum patterns are the most recycled thing in music. There's only so many variations you can do (and still sound good), and they truly bridge the gap between genres to create the familiarity our brain craves.

That being said, I'm also glad to see him pay homage to his influences. Love Nirvana and Gap Band, so this was a dope connection to see

I feel you and I agree that there's countless examples of white artists ripping off the backs of black artists and there's countless examples of it still happening to this day

But I don't think Dave using some Disco fills because his mom listened to The Gap Band is the same as most instances.

It's been overdone to death, but I think sampling is fine as long as royalties are paid out if you're going commercial with it.
