Quincy only recently said that Michael Jackson stole a lot of songs, including Billie Jean from Donna Summers
there are way more stories like this than you realize
Black music growing from black music via generation to generation is wayyyyyy different than what's being said.
It's not about copying within the same genre. That's going to happen. Your neighbor might have the same car as u type s***.
It's about completely stealing from one genre/culture and profiting, receiving creative praise as if these drummers & overrated bands are hot s***.
People don't even know how dope Gap Band and Charlie Wilson truly are but Nirvana gets these accolades...
Mint Condition too
people who understand and have done research on music history understand. Someone who truly cares about progressing the art will let it be. This isnt just stealing and profiting its actually the exact opposite in most cases. It's a mass amount of respect to the former using their craft in a new way. It's keeping the sound alive and evolving it. This isn't a new admission either.. David grohl has been public about this and paid respect to using disco influence in their music. I believe its how its handled and how you go about it but many people such as david grohl have paid proper respect to the source material and used it ina new sound that isn't completely ripping it. Its creative.
For people who dont participate actively in any form of art it might be harder to understand and at that point you just need to do your own research.
everyone does this. The entire album of nevermind is straight up just the pixies sound (soft than loud song structures) with different textures lol. This is such a non-story
I think using drum breaks or taking influence from drum breaks and repurposing them for your track isn't really cultural theft in the same way a complete rip-off is, because of how reproducible they are.
Is white rockers taking influence from Hendrix's style considered cultural theft?

You can say this now but back when he stole those breaks he was in an unsuccessful underground band getting inspired by worldwide disco hits
people really expect every album to be completely different from anyhitng else out there lmfao

Quincy so senile he forget he produced state of independence and had Michael sing on the chorus wit Donna Summer
anyway Billie Jean was inspired by the baseline for I Can't Go For That by Hall & Oates.

Every honest artist will admit to stealing even when it’s not noticeable to us

Good Artists Copy, Great Artists Steal
and tbh Dave the type of dude to admit the moment someone asked. Nobody was smart or cared enough to notice until now

There is only a limited number of chord progressions able to be made.

also this
I feel like the whole "cultural theft" argument gets stretched too much in terms of stuff like this, I don't see it. It's just how artists get influenced by other artists.
btw the foo fighters are f***ing horrendous and have nothing to do with this thread besides them being dave's inferior band
this about the same as using the same flow as another rapper.
i think its still different than that because its incorporating another genre into your own to make something new. It's a lot more creative

i mean, sure i was just framing in a way ppl on the site would look at as not being a big deal
Also music is a thing able to be enjoyed by all, it transcends the social constructs of race. However, it's important you understand it's cultural history and how it influences other genres, etc. and to be honest about crediting it.
now if u want to yell at someone for taking s*** from black artists, zeppelin and elvis are just sitting there
Misleading title
All artists do this. Well the best, anyways
Take and adapt
he literally says he was ripping them off his whole career how is the title misleading

He was well aware of what he was doing... theft is theft. Grohl can now admit his actions after he pulled off a successful heist.
They created "the patent" for a particular reason.
