I've heard the same thing too. One of the hardest languages for a native English speaker to learn unfortunately.
Why is that though?

Idk, weird pronunciations I guess. Helps to have a genuine accent

Salut. I’m learning French too but luckily half my family speaks it so i can talk with them.
Took Japanese classes fall 2018 and spring 2019. Also spent quite a bit of time in Japan last year practicing.
Don’t think I’ll take any more classes so if I want to keep it up I’ll have to stay on top of it myself
Is it rare in the U.S. to learn another language? Don't you have it in your public school curriculum?
In my country we have to learn at least two additional ones by default
Yeah I can see that. When most of the scientific papers are written in English and the news cycle all over the world has adapted to your maternal language you're probably not all too motivated to learn another language.
Still funny tho that the U.S., as a country who originally came to be because of immigrants, doesn't incite their people to learn to talk a diversity of languages.

Been taking Russian for 2 semesters and while it’s certainly complex I’ve found it to be really rewarding. Writing in Russian cursive and saying the sounds may seem daunting at first but it all quickly becomes natural and fun. If you’re trying to self-teach, pick up the Penguin guide to Russian and use LingVist for vocab expansion and practice. A challenge for sure but if you put in the time you can get to the level you want

Thanks for the info. I might pick up that book after doing some ultra basics on duolingo or LingVist(never heard of it until now). I can hardly write english cursive so I'm not going to be doing russian cursive any time soon

As a native English speaker I have been wanting to learn Spanish.
Idk the best way to do it and been using that as an excuse to not start... anyone have experience and recommendations?
Enlisted in the army as a Linguist.
Part of that means I have to spend 32-64 weeks learning a foreign language as an extremely fast pace.
I got Spanish.

What method did you use to learn Spanish??
I understand 5 languages but I grew up being surrounded by 4, so I've really only actively tried learning 1 new language. Speaking a language is a lot harder than just understanding it when it's spoken though, so I'm not completely fluent in 2 of them. One of my resolutions for 2020 was to get better at actually speaking those 2.
