my favorite Murakami book for sure

not surprised somebody who loves Infinite Jest and DFW so much isn't f***ing with 1Q84 tho. they're pretty opposite styles with DFW being much more cerebral and going on long tangents with descriptive prose while Murakami is decisively simple in his prose and advances the story along at his own pace

feel like I've seen a lot of people who rave about DFW, Pynchon, or Bolaño but don't vibe with Murakami

Hmm it’s not that I don’t f*** with him because Wind Up is one of my favorite novels.

I just was not connecting with this story. His prose in this one felt super clunky, and bloated. I also felt like I was just read plot line after plot line. I never felt connected to the characters and everything just felt too convenient plot wise. Wish we knew less about the cults and and all the fantasy elements. Felt like he didn’t know if he wanted to tell us or to not. I think had he played into the ambiguity a bunch more I probably would have enjoyed it more (which is saying a lot because the novel is fairly ambiguous). I have a lot of notes but off the top of my head those were some of the things that’s made for non pleasure able experience. really wanted to like it. Book 2 showed a lot of promise but book 3 took me out

Kafka On The Shore is getting

Not sure what’s up. Really enjoyed Men Without Women, After Dark, and What I Talk About When I Talk About Running but Norwegian Wood has literally taken me 5 months to get through. I just haven’t gotten invested so I skip around with other books.

lotta people love Norwegian Wood but I wasn't all that impressed and it's probably the least Murakami style book he's written

Wind up is peak murakami style and hard boiled is his tightest and most focused book + it’s got some cool sci-fi worldbuilding elements that he usually doesn’t have

Imo they’re both my favorites can’t go wrong

Killing commendatore was so good until the last part where the teenage girl mentioned her b**** 100 times a page why does he always do this lol

is it safe to read these books in a lower mood level, kafka was a little too wild

Kafka is by far his most f***ed up book (also 1q84) so you’ll be good w/ anything else

I recommend hard boiled then it’s a change of pace and very chill and interesting

Norwegian Wood is the one I tore through. I struggled with wind up bird but I appreciated it overall.
