I’d have to go back thru those projects but he’d speak on like the mentalities and intricate parts of his own/the general chase of success and he’d have the specific lines about that for like women I guess songs like lust for life or houstatlantavegas. Vid in op says it better but basically s*** that was relatable for a young person in school or just grinding. Lol I have vague lines in my head from back then from him that say “semester” but it’s blurry

    Fair enough, I get that

Those lyrics and themes never really landed for me, so I don't really share the sentiment but I understand it, it was more present in his older music for sure

I think he does still gives some of that stuff on the outro's of albums or random songs/lyrics he does, but definitely not so often, I can understand why people that appreciate that from Drake would miss it

What I've always liked about Drake I think he's gotten better at in his older age and gives more of, that being catchy songwriting, funny lyrics, good flows, picking beats

Hip-hop as a whole isn’t devoid of meaning, just the mainstream commercial sector of hip-hop. Rappers like 2pac been saying since the early 1990s that record labels were slowly killing hip-hop , and that if people don’t push to go independent , the industry will prevent rappers from talking that real street s*** in favor of party and bullshit music.

Years later after his death, he was right all along. Commercial hip-hop has been milked into a hollow husk. All casuals will die off and say “it’s soulless” and they’ve “outgrown it” , but those people never cared about hip-hop anymore than it being a source of entertainment.

If you truly are passionate for the genre you’ll dig around and find s*** that has meaning, and truly relatable , if y’all feel like hip-hop has no meaning then it purely speaks on the limited and shallow exposure you were given to the genre.

Pac told Niggas this in 1994 , he even said back then commercial hip-hop has always been bullshit , and he was a HEAVY advocate of giving the underground a voice to be heard.

All the casuals listeners don’t know where to look because they are just lazy and shallow supporters of the genre

The obsession with sales accolades that a lot of hip hop fans and artists have really hurts the genre. Art is art doesn't matter if it's mainstream or underground, as long as it's dope

100%…..This is why, personally, each Drake album drop is a little bit more and more disappointing. Obviously this is more easily said not being in that position, but I would feel as if I have a small duty to make sure the genre as a whole is thriving and will be thriving after I’m gone. You know how many rappers in the game currently look up to him but won’t admit it?…..Now I’m not the type to be like “he has to make this certain kind of rap” cause that’s never been him, but anyone can clearly see the decline of relatability in his lyrics and subject matter. Newer artists peep how successful that formula has been the past few years and think that’s what they need to emulate to be successful. And sadly, labels prioritize those artists, and we really don’t have to go into detail to understand exactly why.

there's a disconnect between talking about real s*** and being successful in todays modern day society

if you rock the boat in any way these days you are risking losing fans, money, sponsorships, whatever the f***. S***, if you even begin your career spitting some real s*** you probably won't even blow up these days cause these idiots just wanna clown people for trying to say anything these days.

There's alot that could be said, and actually SHOULD be said, but every one is too scared to take the risk.

There’s always a niche crowd in hip-hop that craves that tho. And there are a some underground artists who are successful at it, however it took them several years over a very slow burn to finally be “hot”. And that’s usually how it goes in that lane, the fanbase will be slow to grow but once it does it’s usually dedicated.
Billy Woods, MIKE, Mick Jenkins, JPEGMAFIA, all started out with barely anyone knowing them to becoming heavyweight names in their respective scene.

It’s easy to jump on a trend, and blow up, but the fans that you cultivate from tryna catch what’s hot will leave that artist when that sound or style gets old.

Not enough artists are cultivating hip-hop for the sake of art, they are scared of getting left behind the wave and wanna stay relevant, but all that does is kill creativity, originality, and authenticity, the three secret ingredients to becoming a great artist in any lane .

    Yes

We can have fun party music and it’s still resonates

But now it’s just brainless / dumbed down music that’s just “vibes”

The art of hip-hop is almost dead and our genre will be in for a rude awakening in the next couple years if s*** don’t change
