this is why I wish I was more into billy woods production wise, because that's an artist that is absolutely retaining meaning within the genre by his lyrics I just can't stand the beats

Fortunately there are a number of artists giving the kinda lyrical content of Billy Woods/Armand Hammer/Euclid, but with production that you might find better suited to your taste.

If you like Billy Woods and them you might also be interested in:
    Pink Siifu
    Maxo
    Ka
    AKAI SOLO
    The Koreatown Oddity
    $ilkmoney
Kahlil Blu (I'd really recommend him if you are a Neptunes fan he has a lot of variety in production similar to them)
    Ade Hakim
    Ahwlee
    Fifthpower

He's right about a lot here. Don't know how you can say the mainstream rap landscape isn't pretty soulless right now.

It's funny bc u can't not talk about Drake if ur talking about mainstream rap but also his career proves this. There's so much more humanity I can hear between TC-IYRTITL (maybe even Views) that isn't there anymore and I feel like it's representative of what's happened in general. A lot of artists today really are trying to make what the algorithm says will be successful or emulating what's already been established by better artists

Idk no one has balls anymore

Look at rap look at sports look at look at social media look at society. Everyone is only where they are because of money. There is no soul in rap for the most part because there’s no soul in money and that’s what they do it for. i don’t blame them, the industry is terrible and people are fake. but that’s no different than what people in the real world go through on a daily basis just on a different level so that’s why rap sounds like that too. a dystopia is right around the corner if we just center our culture around money more and more

true. sad thing is the game has become a lot more centralized and these new generation of zoomers aren't technologically savvy enough to find new music like we did in the blog era. Dudes just accept any garbage that is fed to them on streaming services and put on a "playlist"

It's sad because labels have more power than ever, wasn't supposed to be this way.

saying that the new generation are not “technically savvy” enough to find new music is a crazy statement. now i can agree that some people don’t put in the EFFORT and rely on the mainstream to guide their tastes, but to reduce this to a an access to technology issue is kinda wild.

i’d definitely say the newer generation has the resources and are able to, but just choose not to

If "mainstream rap is trash but there is plenty of underground stuff, you just don't know where to look/are lazy!" is the comeback then that just proves OP/all these threads right.

Never in hip hop history did we have to go on a scavenger hunt to find meaningful rap music. It was everywhere in the mainstream. Of course we're not talking about random underground dudes when these complaints are brought up lol

This only works if the way we consume music is the same tho. What ur referring to is the death of monoculture

Most artists can’t break into the general culture the way they could before

Literally can click on the alternative hip-hip or spilled ink playlist on Spotify for a plethora of upper echelon underground rappers , literally takes 5 seconds of scrolling and typing to have access to hours of new music , easier than ever actually. Not a scavenger hunt

    Blog Era? SoundCloud Rap?

The last 2 generations of rap blew up from getting buzz off the internet because people went on a hunt for new music

    The “scavenger hunt” is:

•opening the music streaming app on your phone

•going to the big New Releases page they all have

•finding an artist you don’t already know 😱

    • pressing play

If it was that easy we’d have a bunch of new stars in music. Those features been around streaming services for years lol

checks mainstream yup, still the same artist on top for a decade now

This isn't true imo. Most of the 2000s was pretty trash mainstream for hip hop, u had to be into the underground to find the gems
