MJ really liked Superthug and In Da Club, and I think I understand where he was at musically. MJ really wanted to smash the urban/black music charts to smithereens and drop another straight hits/Off The Wall type album, except he wanted it to sound new and unexpected, and he wanted it to take over the clubs,im talking real clubs young people went too.

But everyone was trying to force him into this neo-soul type role,i don't think he wanted that,or else he wouldn't have stopped making music like that after Invincible. I know Jimmy Iovine is lowkey a snake in the industry, but in the late 90s/early 2000s,dude was a beast in how he marketed/sold Eminem to the public Dre. MJ needed to be on a label like Interscope working with Dr.Dre,his people he had around were out of touch for the time.

They really killed his vision tho,MJ wanted to try and takeover the clubs and charts one last time, but people boxed him in stylistically. Imagine In Da Club going to Michael Jackson would've been insane. Its cool to think about but,too bad.

MJ also turned down the Justin Timberlake Neptunes songs so IDK if I can trust his taste in that era

Would’ve been a cool evolution but unfortunately the hard truth is MJ stopped evolving creatively from album to album after Dangerous.

I feel like he wanted to do something more urban and less pop. It seems like he really had a thing for harder hitting sounds at that stage

He still had some great music after Dangerous but as you said, he lost his pulse creatively and never reached the same heights he had during Off The Wall- Dangerous again.

It does f*** with me that he turned down "You Don't Have To Call" that song was perfect for him. Starting to believe he Would've performed it better then Usher

  • I love MJ, this is nothing against him. But if he wanted the same level relevance in the 2000s he shouldn’t have turned down all of Timberlake’s hits that were written for him.

Working with Pharrell or Timbo would have kept MJ the biggest pop star of the 2000s

There are definitely moments on History where you could tell that’s the direction he wanted to go. Something less melodic and more aggressive.

It’s very possible if he had recorded those neptunes tracks he could have had a few more hits on his hands, but idk, I think coming from Michael those songs would have sounded a bit too safe.

Either way, it’s pretty apparent invincible was a compromise. It’s clear that when touring he just wanted to dance… I can’t imagine a more neo-soul sound was where his heart was

Bingo,he wanted a modern party album. He wasn't bored or just straight up out of touch,he was just forced into this certain image he didn't like. He was ready to accept Hip Hop/urban culture but Hip Hop/urban culture still saw him as "Michael Jackson = ultra commercial".

I think that killed his musical ambition

I love Justified but Rock Your Body was literally just an Off The Wall lite song, so for Michael Jackson why would he need to make an Off The Wall inspired song when he made Off The Wall?
He wanted to do something more progressive with the Neptunes, he was right for that
