Mike Will did trippy country music for gods sake lol. I wish he ventured out more
Lol what is this bullshit
No evolution after Dangerous lmao
As much as I love MJ and respect him as probably the greatest artist we’ll ever see, this is something that is true.
He was using elements of the new Jack Swing sound he started using on Dangerous on both HIStory and Invincible. One could say he evolved into a more aggressive hip-hop influenced sound on HIStory which continued on tracks off Invincible, but this wasn’t a complete evolution compared to going from Off The Wall to Thriller to Bad to Dangerous. It was clear he was heading towards that direction on Bad and even more so on Dangerous.
Basically, he still made great music for the rest of his life. But after Dangerous, he pretty much stayed in a similar pocket for the rest of his career. I believe if he had lived and dropped another album, there’s a good chance he would’ve adapted to a completely new sound. But that’s a big what if.
Would’ve been a cool evolution but unfortunately the hard truth is MJ stopped evolving creatively from album to album after Dangerous.
That man made Morphine !!!
To be fair it wasn't necessarily a bad idea for him to go into a more neo-soul lane, especially if he was tryna appeal to Black/"urban" music charts as neo-soul was very popular from the early-mid 90s into the 2000s. He's a great singer and he had a team of great producers to help capture that vibe. However, I do agree that his heart was seemingly in a different place and he wanted to make bangers, more club type music.
I think he really wanted to go into the next millennium not being seen as "soft" or for primarily making soft sounding R&B music. He wanted his edge. Kinda makes sense for him to wanna go into a more "hard" direction as he was getting more political, transparent about his d*** use/abuse, where he was in his life, and his relationship with people and the media in his music from the mid to late 90s. This track kinda serves as a good example as to what kinda headspace MJ was in musically in the late 90s.
I definitely would've been here for a raw and pissed off Michael Jackson in the 2000s. Instead we got him singing "You give me butterfliiiiies"...
That man made Morphine !!!
Glad somebody mentioned this before I posted it lmao that was a crazy take.

Crazy definitely one word for it lol

That definitely is a unique example. Probably the heaviest song in his discography sound wise and the only time he really made a song like that. But him delving into a harder rockier sounds was something he wasn’t a stranger to. From Beat It, to Dirty Diana to Black Or White to Give In To Me etc.
He had flirted with that sound before. He just hadn’t gone completely balls deep with it.
Damn I actually really would've liked if they let Michael Jackson go harder and make club bangers in the 2000s. Would've made for a really cool and interesting contrast to what Prince was on musically in the early 2000s when he was making more jazz and spirituality influenced music with The Rainbow Children.
Would've been something of a flip-flop with MJ going more rock and Prince fully embracing jazz and neo-soul. Though Prince was already doing neo-soul around the time Come dropped.
MJ really liked Superthug and In Da Club, and I think I understand where he was at musically. MJ really wanted to smash the urban/black music charts to smithereens and drop another straight hits/Off The Wall type album, except he wanted it to sound new and unexpected, and he wanted it to take over the clubs,im talking real clubs young people went too.
But everyone was trying to force him into this neo-soul type role,i don't think he wanted that,or else he wouldn't have stopped making music like that after Invincible. I know Jimmy Iovine is lowkey a snake in the industry, but in the late 90s/early 2000s,dude was a beast in how he marketed/sold Eminem to the public Dre. MJ needed to be on a label like Interscope working with Dr.Dre,his people he had around were out of touch for the time.
They really killed his vision tho,MJ wanted to try and takeover the clubs and charts one last time, but people boxed him in stylistically. Imagine In Da Club going to Michael Jackson would've been insane. Its cool to think about but,too bad.
None of what you said is true though. Nobody could force Michael to do anything he didn’t want to musically. Michael met with The Neptunes and Dr Dre personally before Invincible was Invincible. He wanted to move forward with Dre but said he’d only work with him if he gave him all of his publishing for the songs they’d do. Dre said no.
He ultimately decided on Rodney Jerkins and that was that.
MJ also turned down the Justin Timberlake Neptunes songs so IDK if I can trust his taste in that era
He never heard the tracks. Michael’s management shot the songs down before they even got to him.
Would’ve been a cool evolution but unfortunately the hard truth is MJ stopped evolving creatively from album to album after Dangerous.
Y’all really get on here saying anything, confidently at that. How the f*** is Stranger In Moscow or They Don’t Care About Us “not evolving” after Dangerous?…. Y’all really don’t know s***.

I was strictly speaking album to album, not single songs.
HIStory is NOT a complete evolution from Dangerous the way that Dangerous was from Bad for example. Especially when you have songs like 2Bad on it which literally sounds like it could’ve been on Dangerous.

Oh no,im not saying anyone was holding MJs hand and telling him what to do,this is MJ,of course he was calling the shots. Im saying producers, just like you explained with Dre,not cooperating with him business wise or the Neptunes sending him sounds he's already done.(and his management not even cooperating with Pharrell & Chad, cause im pretty sure they would've done whatever MJ wanted) He just got stuck in a rut because of industry politics.
I still say that,if he was directly signed to Interscope, whatever he had going with Dre would've been worked but who knows.
