although this is basically a trite statement whenever this topic comes up:

mainstream hip hop has been boring and stagnant for a while, anything interesting will mostly coming from the underground/alternative spheres at this point

The one who breaks this will be…the one lol

This type of thinking is what led hip hop to its dark place. “I usually dont like rap but…” ass nigga. Fans like you gotta get all the way the f*** out the genre so it can go back to just being raw f*** all the glitzy audio tricks to compete with come and go music trends. The classics in the 90’s came when rap was barely just becoming a “pop” thing

Dumbass niggas doing afrobeats and bell bottoms and guitars because they scared to just rap or gotta compete with every new dumbass trend

mf I grew up with hip-hop, I went through the first 'death of hip-hop' when soulja boy started to be relevant and swag rap appeared, and I felt just like you feel now

nowadays climate is very different to what it was back then, nowadays people just wanna have a good time, not listen to some dusthead talk about his hood problems while ignoring their personal problems

most people are already too conscious about social issues on a global perspective, I personally stopped listening to most hip-hop because it started to feel like a burden, I got my own issues to deal with

also music executives focus on making money, not on making people conscious

Was Kanye Wayne Hov Kendrick Drake a dusthead talking about their hood problems while ignoring their personal problems? Who does that archetype even fit and when has he been number one in rap to be relevant in this convo lol

You making excuses for niggas being f***in lazy lmao. Nobody said you had to be a super conscious rapper just try to actually rap well and be somewhat unique. Lmaoo thats literally it man

It would have if Jay Z kept making Sunshine and Ha Remixes with new names for 7 years after those respective summers. Or Nas and the Ginuwine song lmao. Niggas ain’t exiting their fun bullshit song phases to make a Made You Look or Blueprint tier album

Wow just a few minutes ago in another thread I said that Ghais Guevara could be the one to fill that young Lupe/Ye role. His latest projects really shows that variety you are talking about + its mostly self prduced

I peeped one of Ghais tapes a year or so ago

He has a lot of the things necessary but s*** so fragmented now he gonna have to have a co sign and certain push behind him before he realistically has a chance at that. Which is bullshit.

Like how LaRussell (he’s ok no hate) is pretty much the top guy in that lane because he dominates with content and has a team putting all his s*** together

But he definitely has rapping skill to carry that lineage in a modern way and his beats are crazy

Yeah but the thing that inspired me to say this was that they played a part of his song before the super bowl half time show some sort of Apple deal idk. Point is that hes on a (indie) label now and is intersted in more of a mainstream push. I suggest you check out the newer stuff hes putting out

We’re not gonna act like those artists don’t have filler lines and everything they did was amazing? All these artists you mentioned had clear peaks and valleys. I love Lupe Fiasco……but I ONLY love that mixtape s***, F&L and The Cool. Kanye hasn’t made anything I want to listen to since TLOP. I personally think Cole is pretty mid and only really liked him before his debut album. Wayne grinded for years before he really became a star and now he’s been a has been for like a decade. I get they created an era that you are nostalgic for but this music being released today is cool af and doesn’t take itself too serious while still being somewhat lyrical
