by the time swimming dropped, people weren't even rly clowning him all that much anymore (besides travis stans because of ASTROWORLD)

You’re wrong. No one had anything bad to say about Mac when he was alive and he worked with a lot of people in the industry. Of course the love is gonna seem forced when someone dies unexpectedly.

No one had anything bad to say but not many had anything good to say either. Jay said he was nice once but that’s it. Kendall Jenner is friends with rappers too but that’s a low bar for “respect in hip hop” just cause you crack jokes with schoolboy Q. The narrative of him being the best white rapper appeared out of thin air after he passed, even his friends weren’t praising him like that

What's the story behind Travis and Mac's problem? Or did the stans make one up?

If y’all like feeling good more than being logical then I’m not mad at you fam. I acknowledged that he was respected as a person within the industry. But if you honestly think his reputation was anywhere remotely close to what it became after he passed, you’re either lying to yourself or were living in some sort of Mac stan echo chamber. Because it was QUIET for Mac in Divine Feminine era even with Ariana stimulus. He wasn’t even in the discussion

    Stop being ignorant

I can't stand these dudes who constantly think because a artist dies their reputation changes

    that is incorrect

people might become louder about how they feel BUT

that respect and reputation was ALWAYS there.

  • Sep 10, 2020

Well he was an actual artist artist

Gave tyler one of his first production credit back in 2015

Put so many people on the non kendrick tde dudes, earl, vince etc

Was just overall well liked and crazy talented. He was only 26 with like a decades worth catalogue. He definitely wouldve been one of those artists that would’ve hit another mainstream peak in their late 20s

Stop just saying it’s bullshit or ignorant and tell me how I’m wrong. He was respected by TDE and Anderson Paak and had a fan base but was almost at Tyler Cherry Bomb level of irrelevance and was probably about to have his Flower Boy resurgence with Swimming. Relevance aside, he was given props for always improving but he wasn’t praised as some kind of truly great artist or a GOAT white rapper. That came after he passed, no way around it. Maybe the Mac Subreddit was early to that and maybe in closed TDE meetings they would say he was the goat, but the narrative on him blatantly switched when he passed for the general public

Yup you got nothing find a tweet saying Mac is a GOAT contender with more than 10 retweets before 2018 and I’ll delete my account right now

  • Sep 10, 2020

I do agree that mac at his passing was career wise where tyler was flowerboy era

He definitely was gonna hit another peak and reach a higher level

  • Sep 10, 2020

I’m not even in here tryna be disrespectful, y’all can’t have an honest conversation about a passed artist without getting in your feelings

    Hate to be that guy...

    But he died.

He definitely had respect in the game but the praise he’s gotten since his death is something else

His death only put more people on his music. He was already very respected by the time Swimming came out.

Maybe what I’m missing is what level of “respect” we’re actually talking about. He was respected as a cool dude in hip hop, not a god MC or artist

  • Sep 10, 2020

Mac loved music and respected the culture since day one. Ever since Macadelic he was just doing his thing unlike these Eminem clones

Now you gotta somehow prove to me that those likes came before 2018 still under 100 tho that’s the best you could find? These days a white girl will post a video of him playing guitar saying “Mac was a REAL musician unlike those RAPPERS” and get hundreds of thousands

  • Sep 10, 2020

Still don’t get why people still bring up mac and em together. Apart from arguably his first tapes in 2008,2009 mac came from the same artistic strain of like outkast or kanye not them particularly exactly but that general music style
