Maybe what I’m missing is what level of “respect” we’re actually talking about. He was respected as a cool dude in hip hop, not a god MC or artist

He was not a god MC but his artistry was very appreciated in his late releases. Man had cosigns by Thundercat, Cee Lo, Kendrick and Jon Brion. What makes he seen so off is the fact that his first projects didn't aged very well.

    Hate to be that guy...

    But he died.

He definitely had respect in the game but the praise he’s gotten since his death is something else

he definitely respected heavily before he died.

Not on the level of Em tho and this thread is comparing his respect with Em. He reached Em status after death

op was also comparing mac to other current white rappers. he was definitely the most respected current white rapper compared to the others. he wasn’t really seen as corny like a lot of the other white rappers were (talking about his later career.)

Eminem raps about some issues in his life really well which makes people want to rap like that style of rap more and it sounds good. Mac is rapping about his life as if he’s talking while smoking weed and he says some really real s***

What's the story behind Travis and Mac's problem? Or did the stans make one up?

swimming dropped the same day as ASTROWORLD and fans were teasing mac/the album because Trav was getting more attention (ie. "y'all hear sumn?" "y'all listening to mac when trav just dropped? couldn't be me")

mac and travis never had any personal issues afaik but stuff like that definitely contributed to the decline of his mental health

And we can write this stuff off as just “Travis stans” but honestly with where Mac was in his career, I think the “y’all hear sumn?” Sentiment was more widespread than a lot of y’all want to believe

If y’all like feeling good more than being logical then I’m not mad at you fam. I acknowledged that he was respected as a person within the industry. But if you honestly think his reputation was anywhere remotely close to what it became after he passed, you’re either lying to yourself or were living in some sort of Mac stan echo chamber. Because it was QUIET for Mac in Divine Feminine era even with Ariana stimulus. He wasn’t even in the discussion

aight he definitely got a lot of nods after his death but you talking like he was og maco levels of irrelevence before dying

he had a dedicated fanbase and his music was absolutely appreciated by hip-hop fans

u don't remember after his DUI when a news publication referred to him as ariana grande's ex and everybody got on their ass for it?

I feel like a lot of the average hip hop fans weren’t really respecting him like that

He wasn’t OG Maco but more like Cherry Bomb Tyler which is pretty bad

Trust me I know lol. It was nothing like what it became tho. Watching Movies was like “wow this dude isn’t that garbage anymore” type respect it wasn’t “this guy is the most natural and flyest white rapper ever and such a fantastic genuine person”. Everyone gets more love when they’re gone

I feel you but I saw nba dudes listening to that album giving props

I know there’s bigger problems but I don’t like the fake love, we don’t have to act like death stimulus isn’t a huge thing to be respectful

I preface this by saying I haven't listened to Mac Miller in a long time.
But I don't remember him being one of those white rappers that goes out of their way trying to be comedic or be super edgy. A lot of white rappers try and copy Eminem by going with one of those.

Example of trying to be funny

Example of trying to be edgy (nigga even sounds like Em)

How did Mac Miller become so respected

But also why do you think people rather go with all these gimmicks, when he proved you don't have to?

Most of us never looked at Mac as a white rapper, we looked at Mac as Mac. Like you said a lot of white rappers try to emulate who ever is before them IE Eminem, so it just comes off like a corny copy cat than anything else. Mac was just himself. His personality was authentic, he never tried to be anything he wasn't. His evolution was genuine. Going from cheesy (but great) backpack raps into his expermental bag with Macadelic, to WMWTSO, Faces, GOOD AM, Divine Feminine, Swimming, Circles. We watched authentic evolution and we watched him add more skills to his aresenal with each project. He could rap, he was a good producer, he could sing, he could play multiple instruments, he was a genuine talent. The people who came around him respected his genuine. People have nothing but great stories to tell about Mac, no shady s***.
