You've got to find things that you can "control" and are in your direct, external locus of control.
That's a big reason why people say exercise, you truly get out what you put in. I dropped a solid 40 pounds and my depression lifted, not really because the fat had some sort of physiological effect over my mental state.
But because I realized I have some amount of control over my body therefore my life. Hope that helps.
This is super important. My dawgs helped me through my hard times. Few things are more comforting imo then knowing you have a second family that values you and has your back.
At least, that’s if they’re quality friends.
Very true
I love this and value it greatly but you can't downplay the neurological effects of certain things. For instance exercise and spending time in nature are both shown to alleviate some amount of the many different types of depression (not a cure of course, and doesnt help I'm every case either), as well as increase cognitive function and memory recall.
It's a multi-faceted thing, and must be approached from as many angles as is helpful.
That’s like saying the map is the same thing as the territory. You can surely see on a brain scan that lifting weights is satisfying and it is but what I was saying is that it takes way more to solve a problem that is deeply existential (which means deeply subjective and personal). Everyone should have healthy habits but it’s not enough to solve a problem like depression.
become one with it

Everybody reacts differently to everything, exercize may not have been as beneficial to you, but it could be to somebody else.
Strong social support from friends. Always going out and being engaged with friends in fun activities
This.
And remove anything that’s toxic in your life.

I fail to see how working out could fix an existential crisis (that’s what depression is, basically).
The recurring negative thoughts and suicidal ideas (in the most severe cases) won’t be fixed by a good hygiene. High-functioning depression exists and following a well structured routine does f*** all for people who suffer from it. If anything, following a routine will just turn him into high-functioning depressed individual. Saying that working out will heal depression is like claiming that aspirin can fix brain cancer. The only way to heal is to fight the cause, not the symptoms. Working out is good for your health and everybody should work out but come on, depression is some deep, heavy s***.
Maybe seeking beauty doesn’t work for everybody but there’s something absolutely necessary about identifying the root causes of your depression.

But that's not what depression is necessarily, it can have different causes. For you it may have been an existential crisis, but you can't project that onto everybody else.
There are tons of studies that back up how physical exercize is a good way to help treat depression.

I don’t really trust studies because psychology is going through a replication crisis and tends to provide a lot of methodologically flawed papers. As I said, I’m not saying working out is useless, it is useful but it won’t fix anything.
What is depression if not an existential crisis? Whether it’s caused by trauma or by something else, it creates a profound disruption in one’s existence. So it is an existential crisis.

Yes many findings aren't replicated but the positive effects of physical exercize on depression is not one of those. It has been replicated plenty of times. So it's definitely a good idea to try exercizing if you're depressed, but sure it won't solve everything.

Did i not emphasize enough how good habits alone won't fit it? I really tried to lean into that. Obviously deep shadow work and inward introspection are needed to help overcome it. I'm just saying you can't ignore/downplay neurology. The brain is insidiously powerful and each focus is it's own piece of the puzzle. Ignoring one whole aslect is doing yourself a disservice.
You'll note in my first comment how i even said exercise doesn't help every type of depression. Because it's not the same for everyone. It can be started and made worse by a multitude of different things for different people. Finding what helps for your personal journey is the most important thing. I just really resonated with what you said so i wanted to chime in with what i thought was relevant.
