they are right
Eminem has written awful awful hooks consistently for years he has entire albums of dogshit horrible writing saying things in the worst way possible he is not in this conversation

i know people say this as jokes to diss certain artists like “only virgins listen to them” but i genuinely have had no urge to listen to Eminem since my first romantic encounter, and i don’t believe that’s a coincidence
I’d even argue it’s an insult to hip hop to call this the greatest writer it has to offer

His past 4 albums and I could keep going!!
Eminem’s word play is incredible but some of his subject matter is…. Yeah, just not great lol
Wouldn’t fault someone for disagreeing but JayZ being better is hardly an indefensible stance. Hard to believe someone would get this worked up over it

Feel bad for anyone that doesn't realize how extremely trash his hooks are

op has some weird obsession with looking down on “street” rappers, whatever that means
meanwhile, he loves trailer park boy eminem
“Not trying to diminish Jay Z and the urban struggle but on one hand you have a street level tale, and on the other you have federal censorship, religious insights, social commentary that's still relevant to today”
Has gotta be one of the most tone deaf things I’ve seen on here
the idea that “street tales” can’t also be this and far more effectively even

Eminem fans read this and don’t see the problem with it too lol
Wait Nelly at 5???
Kanye at 4?
regardless of one’s opinion about this why are yall turning to NYT for hip hop takes let alone caring about them
ah okay i understand the disconnect here
you have a thing against “street rappers”
you also mentioned West Africa earlier, you live out there? it’s all starting to make sense, no opinion you’ve shared in here could possibly come from someone from the US unless they were openly racist, and you’ve already stated you’re not white.
Nah, I don't hate street rappers.
I also don't think you understand what makes rappers great. C1 Wayne was an excellent rapper, but C2/3 Wayne was when he became his own person.
At some point, you'll get tired of being wrong. No, I'm not in West Africa.
To me Renegade is the perfect representation of Jay Z. Slick rapping with a nice flow about how he had to hustle to come up from the bottom. Very impressive by itself but looks weak af when a rapper who’s lyrically superior is on the same song
Comments like this are why, even with as much praise as he gets, I feel like Jay is still underrated as a songwriter/lyricist sometimes
One thing about Jay is that it never seems like he's trying too hard to be lyrical or witty. He does it effortlessly. So when rapping next to someone like Eminem, yeah it appears like Eminem is the lyrically superior one, but that's actually not the case

I posted a list of my favorite rappers earlier ITT, and they're mostly street rappers.
You can't invalidate opinion through logic, debate or race so you're casting about for things to diminish my opinion.
Which is particularly hilarious because I don't think you're even Black.

Do you want to go through the song and actually defend this statement?

I mean your mind is already made up so not really

But are they those things on that particular song?
I mean your mind is already made up so not really
Lool, of course.
This is the second time I've asked you to back something you've said up and you chickened out.

It's pointless if you genuinely believe that Eminem has released good music over the past 22 years
It's a lost cause
I’d even argue it’s an insult to hip hop to call this the greatest writer it has to offer

Kills me that people begged him to actually work with Alc then when he finally does it’s the worst Alc beat anyone’s ever heard

We're talking about the song Renegade. Don't deflect.
Remove 1999-2002 and Eminem has one of the worst discographies of all-time in rap music
Could say the same for Jay Z
We're talking about the song Renegade. Don't deflect.
The point is there is nothing anyone can say to convince you that Jay is the better writer, your mind is made up already
