Because a bunch of children who were "rap fans" got laundered into Frank through Odd Future (only s*** they listened to besides Kanye) and he broke their cherry on the music they eventually abandoned being "rap fans" for
Unspoken truth lol
No disrespect to and not directed at OP but music discussion is obnoxious nowadays. If I were a musician, I’d quit. Everyone is about to talk about how much Frank Ocean sucks and kept us waiting for nothing for the next few days. Musicians don’t owe us anything. Stop being a fan, fine, but don’t go revising your opinions on everything he’s ever done.
Frank is one of them ones because he’s outside the algorithm, because he couldn’t care less what we think a la Prince.
Also, you hear Frank’s influence everywhere. Pyramids influeced the multiple song breakdown style (Sicko Mode) and Blonde introduced pitched vocals to represent youth (Pain is Inevitable).
If he dropped something of substance today y'all would change your tune doesn't matter though because he won't
Dude barely got charting songs or sales compared to people who have headlined and he’s headlining coachella what do you think?
Frank Ocean is an amazing artist but yes some of the love does feel superficial and part of an ‘aesthetic’. Not his fault tho
Because Blonde tapped into a very popular aesthetic / scene (vapid fake-deep male art hoe) and did it very well
I think it's s***e but its popularity is no mystery
Am I a vapid fake-deep male art hoe?
If I couldn’t understand why Frank is who he is
Life would be a lot simpler I feel like. I’d just sit there wearing my lil helmet, my Mario kart music playing in my empty lil head, eating my applesauce
You’re lucky op, no need to be frustrated
frank ocean is that dude. i think PND is underrated but idk he doesn’t have a Thinkin Bout You, Swim Good, Novacane, White Ferrari. He’s just different can’t describe it otherwise
Because a bunch of children who were "rap fans" got laundered into Frank through Odd Future (only s*** they listened to besides Kanye) and he broke their cherry on the music they eventually abandoned being "rap fans" for
Really, Kanye is the culprit of all of this in hiphop. Better days when rappers just wanted to be the best or toughest rappers

fr frank doesn’t have to drop music anymore if he wants to drop bust down cock rings and ride his bike thru manhattan in peace let him do so he doesn’t owe anyone anything aside from himself and his loved ones
ye did channel orange /blonde 3 times over in like same time span with his first 6 drops
and toured each time
and challenged every establishment he was in
love frank but his music and persona v much aligns with the times. his goat status was prematurely given due to how accessible and inoffensive he is

Stop comparing Frank to Prince lol

we got peak frank. accept it and enjoy it for what it was fr

music isn’t sports man lol

i think ye is the culprit of all of this in the way i explained in my other post about frank. ye doesn't actually make the music credited under his name anymore and hasn't for a long time, and that arguably started with college dropout (Jesus walks being entirely written by rhymefest, etc). ye really started this idea of someone who is a "musical director" or "tastemaker" of their own album a la Travis Scott, who tells the producers to "make it dark and s***" and gets some bars from Cyhi to pass off as his own
my favorite ye song was literally entirely written by Jeff Bhasker. can i even call it my favorite ye song anymore, or a song by Jeff Bhasker, Warryn Campbell, Mark Williams, Raul Cubina and Ye performing/contributing likely very little? i think in general we need to bring back caring about artistic integrity and not just f***ing brand and product. late capitalism a doozy.

denying the competition in music is naive. usually the hungrier the artist the better the output

Youre completely right
Ye is also the first rapper ( i think) who was considered a genius no matter the output, like there always has to be some deep meaning behind the s*** he does. Now that i think about it, that might be the biggest part of his legacy & influence
