you need to get onto genesis onwsu right now guy dropped his debut and it’s aoty material. Great variety of genres and ideas presented on record, massive stamp approve plus his live shows are fantastic.
Spreading gospel to everyone
not just @op (and this is from a kid who's favorite types of music is hip hop, R&B/neosoul, house music, and jazz growing up) but I really hate when being a fan of hip hop/R&B is looked at as "putting yourself in a box" and when you start liking more than just that it's seen as a "progression."
Like hip hop and R&B are just for simpletons. It aint lost on me that there's a racial factor that's played into it (not saying most of yall ITT that are saying this are playing that, but there is some implicit bias.)
I think a lot of people would say that about someone if it wasn't hip hop and r&b
like if someone only listens to rock and they start listening to hip hop and r&b I feel like people would still say that
rage against the machine is a obvious pick
Has my favorite Kate songs Fullhouse, kashka in Baghdad, symphony in blue.
Rubber soul is brilliant too. In my Life>>>
Think Hammer Horror might be my fav off that album but Fullhouse is brilliant too.
all that being said, if I ever get a car and niggas wanna ride, they better know we on some different s*** in the aux.
What r&b artists
Basically everyone on OVO (shocker I know)
Frank
Tiller
Weeknd

Daniel Ceasar
SZA

more than that but thats what I have off the top of my head
honestly i need to get into country more
Don’t think about it like that OP, you’ve got decades to listen to other stuff, and there’s no problem with having listened to stuff you liked for the past few years. Now there’s just more stuff you can listen to going forward 👍
I have not really at all
will make sure to check out funkadelic that name rings a bell
Ah mate, youre gonna love it. You’ll recognise alot of it cos it was sampled heavily in rap
Perfect example would be Biggies Big Poppa samples Isley Brothers Between the Sheets
Its cool to discover the original sound of some of your favourite hip hop songs
I would recommend listening to Baby Huey if you f*** with the 90’s Wu/Lord Finesse sound aswell
obviously I always recommend Charli to anyone interested, one best artists in last decade, her forward thinking pop music is light years ahead of any other person in her lane
Great thread op
I feel the same tbh, I've only started exploring other genres like 2 weeks ago. Will check out a lot of artisits mentioned in this thread
On another note, anyone got more artists like Grimes? Visions is all I've been listening to for the last couple of days
What do you think OP?
But...The best rock artist are black? Get out of that way of thinking, Rock is just as much black music as rap is. Whites took it and rebranded it for themselves and the white dominated media ran with it during the 60s, 70s. Blacks make the best music, any type of music. Best latin music, best rap music, best rock music, best pop music, best jazz music, best r&b, best everything imo. Now I'm sounding racist towards white people lmao but its true tho. Not saying white people can't make good music but gimme Prince with a guitar over any white man.
i acknowledge that & don’t disagree, but the whole “you’ll grow out of rap and r&b as you get older” narrative has been a well-known racist trope for the last 4 decades in the same way “all lives matter” is racist even though it doesn’t explicitly say anything racist. it’s a dogwhistle.
Ill post a bunch of updates and how I like music that u guys reccomended after this s***ty lecture lol
Gotta love Zoom University idk why I even join these lectures I cant focus online

Older soul/r&b/funk is probably the most accessible genre if you mostly listen to hip hop (especially 90s) since they are the biggest influences to the genre
Curtis mayfield, stevie wonder, James brown, isaac hayes, funkadelic etc.

Already by this list, I can tell you ain't even really got into the full scale of R&B bruh.
You can listen to only R&B and be exposed to so much more type of stuff.
