MOTM2 is in my top 10 albums of all time
The dark atmospheres of the music blends so perfectly with the album cover, the sounds and the subject matters are just so raw and personal
A dramatic, angsty, "dark" album but still honest and genuine. People group it with MOTM1 and I think it's almost on the same level, only this one has more fluff (I know in the 2010 review I gave it a 10 but I changed my mind) in the previous review I think I mentioned how I think this album must've influenced cloud rap and emo rap to an extent. Mr. Rager the song is beautiful and it really reminds me of these genres.
The highs on this album are some of Cudi's best songs, they're well produced and capture his essence and heart. Like I said we need to restore the feeling. Also the hums are sensational.
Score: 9/10
Fav songs: Marijuana, Mr. Rager, The End, All Alone, Ghost!
Those “I’m listening to this praised album for the first time and sharing my thoughts” thread trend had to be an all time low for ktt
He’s listened to Cudi before he’s a fan

He’s listened to Cudi before he’s a fan

At least it usually leads to music discussion instead of just twitter links and Stanfights.

such a beautiful album. really damaged dude and he communicated it really well. “pain, hurt, sadness and loneliness, bottle all that s*** right up and put that in the bottomless pit, part of my mind so sick, part of my mind that slips i don’t even wanna take that trip unless im sloppy drunk”
dude was really going through it
i think WZRD had my favorite booklet of any music CD i ever got he put such a heartfelt message in it. part of why i always root for cudi
between motm2 and wzrd cudi stopped smoking weed and my siblings and i were like “nah man the last time couldn’t have been in the marijuana video” and then he dropped high off life and we were like “yoooo”

“I’m tired of motherfuckers saying that they worry about me, when they really never gave a f*** about me”
Simple line from the album but hits hard
I wanted to be a WZRD apologist so bad because this album sounds like something I'd really like, Cudi trying a rock sound which furthers my point on his influence on emo rap, and it being the alternative rock sound of the 2010s, which admittedly was not one of the strongest eras for rock music, but very nostalgic to me because I was 12.
A lot of mainstream bands at the time (i.e. Coldplay, Linkin Park, Muse) either started with, or had to transition to a poppier, electronic influenced sound of rock. This resulted both from groundbreaking albums like "Kid A", which tried to fuse the rock sound with more modern sounds, and from pop and EDM music absolutely dominating the charts, and no new popular rock movement to continue pop punk and nu metal after they died off, with mostly the indie rock/pop scene being notable, but not mainstream (which would definitely be different in the streaming era).
Now I think WZRD intended this album to be part of the indie rock scene, making something creative and unique and transitioning from Cudi's hip hop sound. However this is more like the 2010s mainstream pop rock. This album shines the most either in its catchiest moments, or the moments that remind you of MOTM1 and 2. The songs that are more left field, ended up falling flat to me because they're just not good enough or just don't go hard as they intended.
But for Kid Cudi fans there are iconic songs and moments here, and this is still part of Cudi's golden era and doesn't take away from that magic, despite "flopping". This is rarely mentioned in the conversation of rappers making a rock album, because usually people focus on the worst albums or the best albums (I can only think of Yachty rn), but I think this should be included more in the conversation because it's earnest it doesn't deviate that much from Cudi's original sound and makes sense coming after MOTM1 and 2.
(Btw there's an acoustic song here that really sounds like SB2H, which makes me wonder for how long did he want to make this kind of album).
Score: 6/10

High Off Life, T2MJ and Brake are some of my favourite Cudi songs fr
