“Atleast here you have your mom” this is the mentality I’m trying to break out of. No offense but that sounds like something a child would say. I appreciate my parents but one day they’ll be dead. I’m not gonna just do nothing with my life because I’m scared to be away from my mommy.

Look, I'm not going to judge you man. I'm 29 years old, have a s*** ton of debt and probably wasted a full 2 years of my life getting to where I am now. You do you.

One thing I'll tell you though, a really important distinction: there's a difference between knowing what you want out of life and knowing what makes you a healthier, happier person every day. For you, that might be the army. I would have literally died in there had I enlisted at 18, but it might be healthier for you than an office job, depending on your personality type and specific set of struggles.

The problem is that it's difficult to tell at 18 what you need to thrive. I've been dealing with my own s*** long enough to know that I'm an extrovert who is way more likely to get up for work every day if it means I can help someone and get some instant feedback for my work. I ended up being a teacher.

On the side, I write books, lots of them. My dream is to make money off that work through traditional means, then dump print once my name has value and develop my platform outside the dying publishing industry and parlay that platform into screenwriting and producing opportunities. At one point, I wanted to be part of the publishing industry as an editor or whatever. Somewhere along the line, I found that working behind a desk with other people's writing didn't make me happy. In fact, it could potentially be toxic if my writing career never took off.

The trick to thriving as an adult is to find what makes getting up every day worthwhile for you while taking into account the stress of everyday necessities (paying bills, buying groceries, etc). The military is tough as hell and not for everyone, but they do promise to strip away the other s*** that we all worry about.

I stayed in school for a long, long time. Way too long. I have so much debt. But I liked being in school and I feel comfortable being on the other side of the classroom now. I'm where I belong. Some people couldn't handle the stress I want to take on, or the debt, but it doesn't bother me. I get depressed without it. So if the army ends up providing you day to day challenges that build you up and make you a mentally healthier person, you made the right decision.

So good luck to you. I hope when it's all over you find those years weren't wasted. People clown my profession all the time, but I don't really care because it's good for me.

i wish you all the best bro but won't your mental health history be an issue? there'll be a lot of psychiatric/psychological evaluation

Well I said that because you talked about your mom up there. Anyway it looks like you have your mind made up

    Good luck

Got a 25 yr old cousin in the military right now,all he does is drink all the time and never really talks about his military experiences. Oh yeah,he also posts weird ass jokes on social media. I feel like he’s pretty unhappy but just like op,there’s so many benefits to joining and it gives certain people meaning in ways.

I think most people who join the military didn’t have much a personality in the first place and are lost in life. So if you think you can find purpose in the joining the Army,do it but when s*** hit the fan in there, will you still be a fan

The fact that everyone here thinks that the only thing you do in the army is shoot people shows that you guys aren’t as smart as you think you are. I’m going to basic training then I’m getting a job. I’m not going to Iraq.

yeah lol most people are clueless about the military and just think you'll be an infantryman when there's so much more you can do that have insane benefits and can set you up for the future.

go for it man. good qualifications, decent pay, opportunity to get a degree.
