yeah but i read online that with an ebook, you can jump to the footnotes by clicking etc?
Oh. I don't know
Oh. I don't know
have you read the book?
im starting this today, but why would an ebook not be as good @op ? you seem inactive tho, so ill ask @Campari and @Jjjjesse what they think
Op is no longer with us :(
But you should read in whichever style you’re comfortable with. It’s a longer book than average so you’re going to want to be comfortable anytime you’re reading it. I read physical which was nice because I could hand write notes, add stickies, etc. But I’ve also never done e-reading so if that’s what you prefer/are comfortable with I’d go that route.

I’d suggest reading your preferred method. If you have a history of reading on an ebook, go that route.
With IJ, most people suggest physical because the act of flipping back and forth mimics a game of tennis. Also, once you start getting into the book, you’ll realize how ironic it is that you’re reading it from a screen.
Other than that, just go with your most comfortable style.

yeah i have a copy i could read phyiscally, and i didnt know about the tennis thing tbh thats cool (i read he was ranked when he was young so makes sense; assuming theres something tennis in it)
i already have some idea of the themes etc that it touches on so i know it could be ironic or will be, but rn im more concerned about the ease of accessing the footnotes (or endnotes? are there both?)
thanks for the reply, ill start the .epub i downloaded and then decide if i want to switch to phyiscal
hate to be the traditionalist but you gotta read it physically, I'm sorry
might actuall decide to go the route of paying @proper to read it for me each week on mdma and record his thoughts on each chapter in a voice note that i'll then put through chat gpt to get a summary of and read the summaries on a biweekly basis while piss drunk...but i appreciate your input dude
I tried reading this and dropped it after the first 200 pages of him just describing what it's like being in an office

Yeah just get into it whichever way. It’s a brilliant novel, don’t expect clear answers or to understand every word but I guarantee you the characters or moments you do connect with will stay with you forever.
There’s also a chapter by chapter recap/analysis on litcharts to help you if required.

I dont use an ereader so I wouldnt know! I personally liked the tactile aspect of flipping back and forth between the footnotes. But the book is so massive so i can understand wanting a more compact version.
Have you read any other dfw? His essay e unibus plurum contextualizes the ideas he presents in IJ well.
Don Gately is one of the greatest modern day characters ever written. Sometimes I will randomly think about moments from this book - those last 100 pages are perfection..

Ebook been the way to go
Great book
No you need the paperback bro like lots of footnotes
Yeah the endnotes way easier to navigate on ebook lol
Also, the whole tennis mimicking thing by going back-and-forth between the flipping over the pages to the back I think is heavily overstated idk
Great book, though, I just think people sold this idea that it’s “ Like a game of tennis” Some of the notes are like multiple pages, And then some just like “redundant” , or “ He/she didn’t literally say s***storm” lol
About halfway done now
Ebook been the way to go
