They don’t know it’s just that Cole first album had some tough cuts but wasn’t a classic same with Drake but what saved them was the mixtapes they dropped before if Cole had FNL as his first debut album he would’ve received the same praise as Kendrick with GKMC same with Drake with SFG which still they both got high praise just wasn’t albums

exactly. the mixtapes and penmanship is why people gravitated in the first place. if their debut albums were stronger, this convo doesn’t keep happening

i remember cole being the one of the guys who told dre about kendrick, and saying he would have signed him if he had the infrastructure

i remember them teasing a collab album bringing SO much attention to kendrick cause cole was already becoming established on a mainstream level

    yall weren’t there!!! lmao

yeah i’m realizing they just weren’t there man lol

im a fan of kendrick most

but as a nigga who lived through it, cole first album was an insane success, bigger than what was projected.

cole, drake, future and big sean were popping on the radio before kendrick broke through with swimming pools, the idea that cole fans would need to create the big 3 concept to place cole with an artist he was already bigger than didn’t even make sense

Cole's debut album was under-shipped to stores because his label didn't think it'd sell well.

Yep Kendrick was getting noticed but he wasn’t there yet Section 80 really brought the hype and his feature verse on that that Birdman track with Ace Hood

Yep Kendrick just was smarter with how he cultivated his debut album but he had too because these two were already starting to run things I mean they were signed but two of the biggest rappers in the world which is Hov and Wayne

they were not there at all, which is cool, but dont try to rewrite history now. the disrespect cole get on blogs and social media is crazy lol

  • Kendrick was actually the last addition to the whole Big 3 thing. I'd argue the albums that solidified each of them were:
Nothing Was the Same for Drake (2013).
2014 Forest Hills Drive for Cole (2014).
To Pimp a Butterfly for Kendrick (2015).

Yeah same. I do remember trying to put people onto S80 and playing rigamortis telling people he was better than Cole. At the time most people weren't trying to hear it cause cole was already getting pretty established lol

and still moved 218k off a 70k projection

idk if we’ve seen an artist over exceed expectations like he did since then

Once Kendrick dropped Swimming Pools and The Recipe with Dr Dre that’s when all eyes was on him to see what he brings with his debut album

future wasn’t future when the big 3 moniker began and nicki’s peak rap ability still didnt touch cole’s pen

I guess man I don't agree but I don't really care to argue either end of the day people will give him the spot anyway and this is just yapping

Drake hasn't even been up to Drake's own standards in years

doesnt need to still the biggest
in terms of rap he is only competing with himself

I also remember how Cole pretty much carved out a path for himself in the industry because post-Born Sinner, it was clear his label had no idea how to market him. Cole and his team are the ones who pushed the Dollar and a Dream shows and doubled down on grassroots fan engagement, leading up to playing 2014 FHD for fans and then eventually dropping the album without a single (which was a crazy thing to do with a major label rap album at the time). He took that gamble and won big time because he consolidated his fanbase and they showed up for him when the time came.

If he didn't take control of his career that way at that particular time, he'd probably be in Wale's position right now so shout-out to him and his team for having the wisdom and foresight to make those moves.

    Drake

    Nicki, Kendrick, Cole

    Then there's everybody else

nicki is iconic, but she didnt put out enough projects to be on the same level as the other artists for me

but overall and in terms of impact you could say she is on that level, based on the fact she has been running female rap for over a decade.

I agree I’m proud of Cole cause even I too at time around 2011 was like who this guy and I was wrong once I heard FNL I knew he was here to stay

Kendrick was always the underdog until he put out TPAB. Cole fans wanted a reply to that but didn't find it in 4YEO. DAMN officially put Kendrick at the solid #2 spot and Coles been fighting to take it back since. TFO might do it cause I'm already seeing Kendrick return to that underdog position in a lot of peoples eyes. We'll see
