All of the top contenders died
died, went to jail, lost much steam during covid or straight up just quit
skipped a whole era n gen
Is this real? NBA Youngboy bigger than Bad Bunny, Bey and Taylor Swift?
He’s not bigger than them but his catalogue just got more streams than there’s if that makes sense
I might be wrong in saying dying. Too strong a word.
But I feel it’s been declining since mid-2010s
We’ll now there’s like multiple different questions in here to be assessed
Radio death kills all music stars because it was a place to create ubiquity in music
Like Taylor is also really the last big pop stars that’s a household name across generations
Rap isn’t devolving but music consumption is
There will be no more superstars.
Yea it’s just changing
Like I don’t think there will be summer block busters either, but maybe I’m just older and my illusion of cultural monoliths was bound to dissipate at my age
All of the top contenders died
And this is what's hurting rap more than anything. Look at X Juice and Peep, rap should be a in a whole different landscape right now but leaders keep dying.
Haven’t enjoyed new rap for like 3 years now
Her Loss was good but Drake sounds soulless at this point
21 can you do somethin fa meh memes and Middle of the Ocean were all I got out of that album tbh

What a bad take

Sounds more like of a you problem then. There’s a lot of s*** on the album that hits
28.
So you can prolly understand where I’m coming from.
I was an aware kid when 50, Eminem, Kanye, Wayne dropped.
In my young adult phase when Cole, Kendrick, Drake dropped.
So who in this generations gonna inspire me? Lil Baby? 🥴
Future’s run was life saving though, long too. Drake and Fewtch most consistent
You’re no longer the target audience so no one will probably be inspiring you anymore

How old are you?
drake didn't bring anything new he just did it the best. rap isnt devolving. theres plenty of young massive rap stars rn. ban op
Interesting take
Drake being able to adapt to the microwave era so well is what separates him from alot of the rest.
Imo he might be the last REAL superstar that dominates for this long.
Drake’s reign has only been so long because no one news been good enough to replace him.
I don’t think it’s ever taken 10 years for someone to be unseated in rap history
You’re forgetting that in the 90’s, two of Hip hop’s biggest stars- 2pac and Biggie- were both shot and killed at the beginning of their prime career-wise.
That’s why artists like Drake’s are new; the artists of generations passed never had the ability to go as far as he did.
bro check sales and streams combined not just streams
Sales don’t mean s***

I'm surprised it took this long for someone to bring up this point but yes, Drake's TRUE superpower is his ability to act as a chameleon. He'll do and become whatever he needs to do/become to adapt and continue to evolve his sound and style while still keeping it close to who he is musically. Not to mention the times he has branched out to embrace global styles/sub-genres to add more variety to his stuff. No other rapper in history has done as much as he's done in that regard and that's just one aspect of his legacy as a musician.
This is something most of his peers don't do because they can't and those who try to do it usually fail miserably at it.
It should also be stated that his general openess to embracing new acts has helped as well. He has never given off hater energy when it comes to new sounds/styles in the game. If it's something he f***s with, he'll usually make it known by showing love somehow and if it's something he doesn't f*** with, he won't go out of his way to s*** on it either.
All those things combined with his innate skill, ability, talent and hunger as a musician are more than enough to ensure that he'll be here for as long as he chooses to be because as much as people online will tell you they don't listen to Drake's music, most people do, whether passively or actively and the numbers/general discourse around him/his music prove that.
And to answer OP's question, yes, he is the last rap superstar in the true definition of the term.

Microwave era is a good way to put that
Rap’s slowly dying
Have you considered that you might just be getting older? From 2018-Now I’ve become less enthusiastic about music and check less, but not coincidentally this is also my transition into adulthood. If you go talk to some 16 year olds I bet there just as excited about Yeat and Youngboy as a 2012 kid was about Kendrick and Rocky.
