an artist making work with the sake of their fans in mind first isn't an artist anymore. they're a product pusher
This is why I respect the Weeknd
He kinda fell into that trap with BBTM and Starboy (which is a great fking album), but he QUICKLY rebounded with MDM and AH.
He's just a big as Drake and is still able to push boundaries and do what he wants to do without sacrificing the quality of his music

precisely. i think drake lost a bit of confidence in regards to how dedicated his fanbase was (and we can see just how less cohesive and community-like it is compared to kanye or the weeknd or travis or carti or whatever) and worked to appease them to keep them in and it created QC problems.
if he did what he wants and let everyone else tag along it'd be far more productive for him
Like, in this era, is he too big to make a concise 12-13 track solid album?
He spoke about this during the RR interview that he has to cater to so many fans so he can never make that kind of album.
I think that's a cop out. If Hov can make 4:44, then Drake should be able to make the album that everyone wants
Or maybe we have to accept that maybe Drake just isn't that type of artist.
IYRTITL might've been the album that we always wanted.
Thoughts?
hov in 2017 wasnt in his peak of popularity, drake still is. i dont expect him to drop something like that for another 5-6 years

I'm not talking about the subject matter of 4:44, but rather the conceise direction.

Good point
he's just trying to make his numbers before he has to bail out. its cool will probably get that as the comeback album
Drake is most likely simply not capable of making a great album
IYRTITL was great but it wasnt written by him
Nah nobody is forcing Drake to appeal to all audiences but for some reason he thinks he has to
isolate them who cares every great artist has an album that alienates their audience
He told us during the Rap Radar interview.
We'll never get the concise Drake album because he feels obligated to make an album that checks off all the boxes of music that his fans except him to make.
It's sad that he doesn't make music that he wants to and basically admitted that's the formula he needs his albums to meet because he's a business now. No wonder his last few albums have come out the way they have.
People call Drake formulaic now and it's hard to disagree even as a fan.

I don't like to buy into the ghostwriting talk, but I was listening to IYRTITL the other day, and it's crazy that NONE of his other album sound like this - particularly the delivery
Dude was spitting so confidently
isolate them who cares every great artist has an album that alienates their audience
Drake just simply isn't willing to take this risk
Even tho it wouldn't be a risk
Like, what is Drake's 808s - the album that forced him to step outside of his comfort zone and push his creativity?
I'm sure Drake and Co. could definitely put together another 13 track project of amazing records but he just scared for some reason

Yup, I agree

The closest thing was If you're reading this it's too late and it's one of his best projects.
I think people are so disappointed in CLB because they really expected an RnB album but we got an album of Kanye disses that no one cares about. It would have been such an amazing rollout to drop the 14 track lover boy RnB project

I don't really think we were expecting an RB album, but rather just an overall good album with a conceise sound.
Instead, we basically got Scorpion pt.2 - a collection of songs. Not bad songs persay, but just songs if that makes sense
Like, I LOOOOOOVE Knife Talk, but did that song really belong on this album?
FYI NWTS exists and is his most concise album so its not like he hasn't done something like that before

NWTS was cute, but come on fam
That was 2013 and he hasn't really shown any growth since then
Once again, I LOOOOVE Drake. This is not a hate thread.
At this point in his career I would just like to see grwoth instead of Girls Want Girls and Way 2 Sexy (even tho those songs slap in real life lol)
You're comparing Hov in his 50s to Drake in his prime? How many 10 track albums did Hov drop when he was still commercially relevant?
Scorpion is concise for a double album. A Side does it's thing and B Side feels complete but different from it. B Side and NWTS are his most concise
isolate them who cares every great artist has an album that alienates their audience
He did this with More Life
