is jay and andre not enough?
I'll give you Andre, but he's a super nice guy and will basically compliment anyone.
Give me a minute let me find a link that demonstrates why Frank's writing is overated
over where the trees burn down
place where the fields went down in flames
we could put a hole in the ground
throw seeds and dance for rain
it takes a mind to worry
a conscience to feel ashamed
but there’s no place to hide out here
these skies are filled with planes
and both our hands are filthy
pointed up at the moon
all tonight, I’ll hold you close, close enough to bruise
hope a garden grows where we dance this afternoon
hope our children walk by spring, when flowers bloom
hope they’ll get to see my color
know that I’ve enjoyed sunshine
pray they’ll get to see me
wither
eminem avy talking about “random word association” LOL
When Em does it, its obvious that that's what he's doing and he gets s*** on. When Frank goes on an incoherent ramble about strippers and the pyramids, KTT2 suburbanites collectively cream their pants.

if u think pyramids is incoherent ramble then that’s more on u fam LOL it’s a very clear and concise story he’s talking about with regards to sexuality, class and hundreds of years of history
i never forget a face
don’t go plastic on me
nothing’s set in stone
you're not dipped in gold
dipped in gold
you can’t breathe if you’re dipped in gold
you are not on paper
you are not a copy
you're so, you're so..so thick, so thick
a description of what its like to romanticize so intensely that you destroy the feeling entirely, and maybe a mantra that tries to keep that feeling alive
why are people acting like word association is a cheap trick and not a very common trait in good songwriting

What Frank (and Sufjan Stevens and writers like them who I like to refer to collectively as Tumblr-core) do is craft a loose, vague narrative and rely on the listeners to fill in the gaps.
Now, add that to evocative instrumentation and you pretty much have your listeners reflecting their complex emotions onto the musical narrative and you can pretend like you said/wrote something deep.
It's not bad, per se, it's just extremely overrated.
If you think I'm joking, write a Frank Ocean type song in your head and see how long it takes you. If I haven't got a headache rn, I'd try my hand at it.

Anti Frank Ocean arguments often feel so disingenuous bc they are, no point in engaging

is it hard for u to comprehend simple tracks like pink + white, lost, ivy?
if i could write a song like frank ocean then frank ocean wouldn’t be frank ocean lol

who is good then? someone with lyrics that leave nothing up to interpretation?
engaging the listener is again, a sign of good songwriting
@CrippledGod curious which artists active today u think are amazing song writers if jay elec, frank and sufjan don’t cut it

Again, it's not bad. Just overrated/overpriced. It relies on the listener to do the heavy lifting, piecing things together that the writer didn't consciously intend and Halo Reaching for associations that end up contradicting themselves.

you sound like you describing poetry to me, and that’s the beauty of it all

Carrie and Lowell changed my life. Again, I'm not saying any of these guys are bad songwriters (except Jay Electricity, but in all fairness I don't really listen to him). I'm just saying they have a schtick, much like Cormac McCarthy has a schick, that tends to get praised because it either:
1. Feeds into/from our melancholy as certain sorts of people
2. Is unusual either for the era or the genre
