His chop game is so elite that people think he really just loops s*** up.

    I been saying this

It’s the way he layers samples as well

If someone doesn’t like his stuff that’s whatever it’s all about your own taste. But we not gonna act like he’s not one of the best sample based producers oat, No one not even the old school legends layer and add as much detail to their beats as he does

Madlib the real inventor obviously but Alc with the rap camp movement and the rush of collab projects in the late 10s early 20s has made him an essential figure in that sound too.

He arguably spread the sound more than Madlib did and has turned it into more of a specific vibe than just minimalist beats/loops. He made it into this more hazy smoky thing

If we’re just arguing about the semantics of the word pioneer and the fact that it is not the same as inventor then whatever lol but Alchemist was doing this as early as Knx

    I’ve always said this

Madlib started this underground scene but Al but it on his back and carried it to where it is now

    Thank you

Especially when you put it like that, in terms of a scene.

The other day when Amp Fiddler passed it had me thinking about how important and impactful it can be to nurture upcoming talent, how that can be just as big of an achievement as creating music itself, to help really foster a scene or mentor an artist(s)

To think about what Alchemist has done from the rap camp era to now, all the artists he has worked with, done great projects with, and connected and inspired, to create such a thriving underground scene in a landscape where there isn’t that much else even happening, is enough for the label “pioneer” in this sense, I feel like he really is putting a scene on his back like you said

I genuinely don’t think people understand how big of an impact the rap camp era made

If you listen to interviews from almost anyone in the scene (2010s era or modern) like 90% of the time they’ll bring up how they all got connected through Al. He really opened his studio up as the main hub

And we’re just now seeing the new artists coming up who were directly inspired by his early 2010s work. He kinda talks about it all in that idea generation interview if you haven’t checked that out

Some alchemist stuff throughout his discography can be or miss. But his best is some of my favourite music. Listening to him feels like watching a 80s movie or playing an old 90s videogame. You can just get high, curl up and let it wash over you.
