I need to rewatch this but I was definitely too hyped going into this like I avoided trailers and expected more meaning
I give it a 3/5
I feel like Jordan Peele gets too bogged down in subtext instead of focusing on the characters, story arcs etc.
I felt Daniel Kuluya was directed wrongly..his lack of emotion throughout the whole film frustrated me to no end. Its a shame because he's an incredible actor.
Keke Palmer's arc didn't pack a punch. All the ingredients are there for a satisfying arc but they are never properly fleshed out.
Finally in cinemas here
Amazing experience
Lacks in characters etc
But i really enjoyed it
4/5
Wait one part that tripped me out The scene at the show where everyone got abducted, the one chick was there from the old gordy show? She survived? Her face was f\*\*\*ed uppppppp and the shirt she had on of her younger self?
Aye my girl pointed out that in the beginning when we first seen Keke Palmer she said something about “the first negro on film was a 2 second shot of him on a horse”
And then the movie ends with a 2 second shot of Daniel on a horse

I like how the twist of not looking the UFO in the eye tied into OJ’s character. Very early in the film I noticed he avoided eye contact a lot and thought it was due to being anti social/ shy, so I like how that had a pay off
great point
That fake out with the kids dressed as aliens really might have been my favorite scene. Wish it had been real so bad
honestly this song is a forgotten gem sucks its not on streaming but i play it back. og myspace vibes
Biggest issue is the writing with this. Best directing Peele has done so far
Just wish it was more like streamlined or something
But if this was released in the 80s or something itd be considered a classic lol, feel like the expectations with blockbusters just changed alot
really loved this movie, how spacious it was in its few settings. n the weird space of that sibling relationship where there is some underlying tension or resentment that doesn't completely separate them/derail everything. their contrast was nice to see in the movie
I've said it before and I'll say it again
Gordy after killing one human castmember

this thread hilarious i avoided it cus i hadn't seen the flick yet but Lol
watched this in imax, some good s*** but i didnt understand the monkey scene
Jupe was trying to tame a predator much like gordys home producers tried to tame gordy
watching reviews like this make me wonder if im a pathetic hater
dude says its the best alien movie hes ever seen, best movie on grief hes ever seen, best brother sister dynamic hes seen in years. perfect score. will make you cry at the end. bone chilling scary etc
and im like wtf have you seen, it wasnt scary, i felt almost nothing close to tears and i cry at movies all the time and i walked away let down in many key areas of the film
great score, solid acting, amazingly shot, funny pieces in the script. ok movie 6/10

agreed
this keeps happening to me for jordan peele movies, he gets obsessed with the deeper meaning/messaging of the film and is really trying to say something which is valient BUT the MOVIE itself is lacking in so many ways that make a movie truly great
for example this is an alien movie, i was not moved or scared of the alien at all. this is a story about love and loss, family and tradition, and there was no bow tied on at the end. there was no deep feeling for me. just looked and sounded cool with all these hidden easter eggs that are dope when a movie is great but the movie needs to be great first and foremost for me to care about what youre 'trying to say'

this when i thought the movie was going to take a turn and be great then youre like "oh. ok"

yeah it tries to be both an alien movie AND be about the subtext, the latter of which i thought was poorly executed. i loved most of the space craft/alien stuff because i'd never seen it portrait like almost a monster in the sky.
