Interesting
Yeah
Every major awards contender usually has one dominant line of criticism that snowballs in a couple months
There was an opportunity to make Mollie a complex character but she’s underserved by the script and mostly just ends up being a naive victim (to the point where you don’t really understand her motivation)
This hard because it’s extremely nuanced and not at all black and white. I think given the material Scorsese did an excellent job. I think the criticisms are valid. I think given his entire catalog it’s not shocking that her character was the way it was because I think he’s more interested in showing that there is no salvation for the ones who work in the shadows. And that’s not to say her pov isn’t important but I think that’s a completely different film and story altogether. Not familiar with all the background though with the book and I am very interested in picking it up and learning more about it. Hard subject to tackle.
When the guy is asking about adopting kids and the inheritance and the other guy is like, “You do realize you’re making it sound like you intend to adopt and murder these kids, right?” that got a decent laugh from my audience

This is the only good podcast. The rest all suck, need to go. This one can stay. How are these real guys that exist somewhere

They heard Scorsese pleading for balance in cinema and all they heard was "Ohhh this old mf shat on Thanos!"
Y'all, De Niro is 80 and could choose to coast at this point, but he's out here performing like this
Imma be honest tho …
Currently, there’s a Marvel movie in my Top 10 of the year
There’s not a Scorsese movie

When The Marvels comes out and blows this out of the water
Christopher Nolan, Cillian Murphy, RDJ I’m sorry but y’all should’ve moved yall release date
This Leo & De Niro’s award season now
I wanted to start with the two things I constantly thought throughout the movie: The theme of tragedy and the emotion of frustration.
Tragedy is seen in the first few scenes when the town is shown to be overrun by the wolves. The man controlling the allotment, the predatory shopkeepers, and not to mention the people seeking to marry the Osage for their head rights. There never seems to be a moment without some evidence of increasing tragedy. Hale immediately opening himself up and the film not hiding that fact for a reveal later I think is a smack to the face of the audience to awaken them. The singular emotion that prevailed was frustration. Again, the Scorsese never for a moment hid the intent of the wolves. It really feels like a constricting bind on you.
I had some personal connections to the movie. I’m not claiming to be Osage or any nearby nation. I’m Meherrin Nation of Hertford and Gates County NC. Of course, Native actors were cast in the movie and it was very good to hear the cadence of the chief’s and elder’s voices as they spoke. They spoke like my family, so that felt incredible. The ending dance was exactly how our powwows were. Drums playing with the dancers circling around (we had a fire in the middle, so a slight difference). My cousins Keith and Mickey were very much into Meherrin history and Native history in general. They would have LOVED the film I think. The Scorsese bones with Leo and De Niro along with the Native representation is the type of movie they would have adored. I’m sort of going to use this film as an honor for them. My own little “For…” card.
General movie thoughts: the 3.5 hours flew by. Every moment mattered and it was never a chore or bore to me. It was very enthralling. My audience was captured by the screen. It was very funny too, which was a good reprieve. There’s no world where Lily Gladstone doesn’t win the Oscar. Leo and De Niro too. I thought RDJ and Cillian would be hard to beat, but man. I’ll be back on Monday for a rewatch and will probably write more than lol.
Just came out of this. Great movie. Serves its purpose as a homage to native americans and the atrocities commited back then. Scorsese tapping into his 4th wall Hitchcockian bag in the last 5 minutes was great. This also shows me that Robert De Niro does those crappy ass films to have fun, mfer is 80 and might be top 3 oat with this.

I feel tho that this couldve been trimmed to 2.5 hours. Also I feel like he had more emotional punch with a similar perspective on the irishman.
Every time DeNiro shows up in the racing goggles
You know they all knew it looked goofy af lol
Scorsese’s best ending to a film
do you think the purpose was to turn the film on its audience kind of? the basically all white cast of performers telling this story to a mostly white crowd from what I could tell and sort of unintentionally sensationalizing the story...felt like Scorsese kind of taking a dig at himself in a way despite his honest intentions...idk just found it super fascinating though it was also abrupt...at the same time it felt like you didn't need to see the characters themselves play out those final years that they go over in the play...deadass didn't recognize Sturgill Simpson, Jason Isbell, or Jack White in this f\*\*\*in movie
Thats an understatement this was one of the more unsettling movies ive seen in a while
The most depressing movie I’ve personally seen. I haven’t seen too many brutally depressing movies tbf. But of what I’ve seen, this has to be it.
Scorsese’s best ending to a film
Makes up for the rat in the departed for sure
Did the movie have low vocal audio? Like it was quiet to hear when they were talking. Everything else was loud like the music , cars, guns||, ||explosions
Great film - never noticed the length, always thought it was really tense and compelling. Something so ominous and dark about the whole thing, really creates this tension in the pit of your stomach imo.
By comparison i like the Irishman but at times I was def like oh there's how much left!?
