Well the more annoying thing is that they find ways to s*** on artists they don't even care about/don't listen to for their chart performance

It works both ways. If they don't like something, then they can use poor sales to justify their opinion. The mysterious music meme is a good example of that, when it's meant sincerely.

because music is all about brand and image

You’re right, they were buying the album 20 times because of that one song that was on it.

  • Caring about chart performance more than the actual quality of the music itself is definitely some kinda mental illness.

Remember when KTT swore Future was over and Desiigner was here to replace him, or 6ix9ine was becoming the biggest artist in the world

    ‘Music listeners’?

    You mean this forum

It’s literally one of the only tangible methods to measure music. It’s been a benchmark for success measurement by hip hop artists throughout history. It’s obviously not all the way indicative of what is good and what is not, but that’s probably why people find it interesting

People do take it too far when they act as if it’s the end of all means, but I think people are kidding themselves by saying it’s not a factor at all. There’s a medium somewhere

Craziest thing is that music as an art and thing to generally enjoy doesn’t need to be measured or benchmarked

They also invented a fake rivalry between YG and Kendrick/Schoolboy

And then when YG ended up having both featured on his album + cited GKMC as an influence + Schoolboy outsold and they acted like it never happened.

Now they invented a fake rivalry between Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo, and swear Billie's career is over.

Nah lol this wasn’t nearly as much of a thing back then, you didn’t get artists begging fans to buy multiple copies or s*** like that. Internet stan culture has made the charts a bigger point of discussion than it used to be, it was always a part of it but not like it’s become with so many fans taking an active interest in it

I generally agree but hip hop is an ultra competitive genre that emphasizes on who is the best or who is at the top. Sales are a reflection of that. I think people have just taken it to a level that’s equates high selling = quality which isn’t true at all it’s a lot more nuanced than that

Radio payola was probably more of a thing back then. The label could just pay a station to get their song up.

Vanilla Ice would have had diehard STANS on KTT swearing he's the greatest and cussing out ppl if it were the early 90's.

ironic because chart numbers have way more to do with how much money is spent on promo than anything else...

many people think they reflect quality, and they kind of do, but only to a certain extent.

I really don’t think anyone is using charts as a metric for what’s good or not. Chart watching is good for things like longevity and numbers, which IMO isn’t a bad thing as long as you’re actually taking in and critiquing the music. Sales have ALWAYS been apart of the music conversation I’m not really getting why it’s such a big deal nowadays.

the only people i ever heard talk about sales back in the day were the literal dj hosts on the radio

Nah. Vanilla Ice would get the Macklemore treatment.

Coolio would be a better example tbh. A lot of people don't even know that Coolio outsold Tupac in 1995.

I could see niggas bigging up Coolio over Tupac and Biggie because of how huge of a song Gangsta's Paradise is.

Oh yeah stuff like that is definitely dumb as s*** because it just becomes a d*** swinging contest and moves away of the true purpose of art. I’m always going to be happy for hip hop in general to be on top of the charts however due to the fact that the artists of yesterday had to sacrifice so much to get us to this point where we can even have these discussions
