Duh, kids listened to 6ix9ine on YouTube or just loved his antics, he isn't the type of artist to bump on Spotify lol

idk about # of users but the # of monthly visitors were nuts, I forgot how much it was but it was way more than youd think
It is if you’re monitoring popularity
yeah yeah that’s what I mean. real ones realize it doesn’t matter at all
That Lorde thread by @boobdylan got me thinking
Does an artist’s success act as a a form of validation for the type of music that you listen to?
Edit: @2words ’ post clarifies what I’m talking about:
Nah lol this wasn’t nearly as much of a thing back then, you didn’t get artists begging fans to buy multiple copies or s*** like that. Internet stan culture has made the charts a bigger point of discussion than it used to be, it was always a part of it but not like it’s become with so many fans taking an active interest in it
we’re on a hip hop forum. sales have always been integral part of hip hop discussion, and pop discussion to a lesser extent
most people irl dont care

I do wonder if the increased popularity of hip hop has lead to an increased attention in chart watching as a whole

Become? I've been here since 2013 and it's always been this way.
People are insecure about their music taste and need to have their opinions validated, so leaning on sales figures is a simple way of accomplishing that.
Haven't read an insightful piece of criticism regarding music on here since---- uh--- ????
if ktt2 existed in the 1960s you would have beatles vs stones chart wars instead of drake vs whoever
Chart performance just reflects who's running s*** (in general there are some exceptions). I don't really care for it musically. I was bumping durk when he sold 15k fw. I was bumping moneybagg in 2016. Gucci in 07 08. TDE doesn't sell well. List goes on.
It's just to gauge who actually matters in terms of the bigger picture, not personal opinion. So when people say dumb s*** like "X rapper" is more talked about, we know they lying.
Oh, tyler and travis arent top 3
Sales matter because they affect the way artists approach their next projects. See:
Crash Talk
DAMN.
Dark Sky Paradise
Kanye’s post MBDTF discog
To make talking about music more like sports. Instead of shooting averages we got chart performances and record sales to compare who the best.
