Radio payola was probably more of a thing back then. The label could just pay a station to get their song up.

theory: That money went from Payola to fake fan accounts/bots to encourage fan engagement to make them stream more stuff

Vanilla Ice would have had diehard STANS on KTT swearing he's the greatest and cussing out ppl if it were the early 90's.

Nah. Vanilla Ice would get the Macklemore treatment.

Coolio would be a better example tbh. A lot of people don't even know that Coolio outsold Tupac in 1995.

I could see niggas bigging up Coolio over Tupac and Biggie because of how huge of a song Gangsta's Paradise is.

A lot of users were rooting for Macklemore. I had arguments with a user who said he deserved the Grammy over Kendrick.

They also invented a fake rivalry between YG and Kendrick/Schoolboy

And then when YG ended up having both featured on his album + cited GKMC as an influence + Schoolboy outsold and they acted like it never happened.

Now they invented a fake rivalry between Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo, and swear Billie's career is over.

Then when Billie has another massive hit, they'll act like it's a shocking career renaissance even though it's only been like 2 years

  • real talk bragging about ur fav artist sales is just saying "lol my artists label spends more on promoting his s***"

Labels are really using social media to fabricate validation for music listeners. S*** is crazy

You only win by not playing imo

Nah. Macklemore was one of the most disliked/polarizing rappers on KTT for a while and the users who caped for him were clowned.

Drake is number 1 on and off the court

in this case on and off the charts

  • Don't see how else you could measure a successful artist without any form of number tracking

Remember when KTT swore Future was over and Desiigner was here to replace him, or 6ix9ine was becoming the biggest artist in the world

The KTT2 Future Was, 2016 (colorized)

Not a new thing. Been this way since the beginning of time. It's the only tangible way to talk about music, otherwise we'd be going around in circles about people's opinion.
