It was a long five years man

Judged the album off the rip for what it wasn't (I expected angry, socially conscious Kendrick barring out) instead of what it was (an insightful, vulnerable examination of where he's at today with his family).

For me, rap albums that are hook heavy and melodic tend to be growers and those catchier tracks did grow on me a lot.

you know there was a video some niggas released that was titled "is the average hip hop fan too stupid to understand kendrick lamar"

i initially dismissed it as pretentious hipster s***, but seeing niggas conflating the crown of thorns with a messiah complex is really making me rethink it, it's either niggas aren't listening to the music or just being willingly ignorant

No cap Iā€™d actually like your take on the Glastonbury shows

I feel that, I feel that. I legit didnā€™t know what to expect personally so some of these songs came as a shock

This is starting to become on par with TPAB for me.

Actually, f*** it, all his albums are 10s

said this during the initial thread I have TPAB as his best album but as time goes on this album will be remembered just as much or even more cause it's a more intimate story and concept that everyone can relate to. TPAB is pretty exclusive to the black experience

No cap Iā€™d actually like your take on the Glastonbury shows

i mean he clarified on stage that he wears the crown so people recognize "one of the greatest prophets that ever walked the Earth" in addition to saying that "they judge you, they judge Christ"

(sidenote: i am not a christian, but i do come from a christian background)

i take that as the whole macrocosm-microcosm that is apparent in the major religions of man being innately spiritual (or really, beings period if you wanna get animistic) that man is ultimately a reflection or a part of God. Advaita Vedanta within Hinduism touches on this and it translates into non-duality, it isn't what we do that is spiritual, in essence we are all spiritual beings out of mere existence, because that's also what God is, ipsum esse subsistens. love thy neighbor because you are also your neighbor in pure consciousness/spirit and vice versa, subject and object are one in the same

anyways, metaphysics aside the dude is literally rapping throughout the entire album that "he is not your savior" plus revealing his own personal demons and skeletons in the closet. this is obviously antithetical to Jesus who was reported to be without sin. so why would kendrick don a crown of thorns as if he was actually Jesus the savior of humanity if you understand the entire concept of the album? clearly it's a metaphor of sorts. i took it as him wearing the crown of thorns symbolizes what they did to Jesus after they finally got a hold of him for his crucifixion, Jesus went against the times, and Kendrick is doing it in similar fashion by speaking on cancel culture and what he perceives as a lack of consciousness + freedom of speech in the U.S (plus the controversy he received for Auntie Diaries, he was clearly anticipating this to happen which is why the crown was literally donned on the album cover)

i guess the metaphor could be argued to be heavy-handed or the message in general could be lost in translation due to how inextricably associated the crown of thorns is correlated with Jesus, but i think a cursory a***ysis of the album itself it isn't hard to glean that he isn't wearing the crown in an arrogant preening manner. that's just me though and that's what i think makes sense. i don't think kendrick would make an album detailing his flaws and shortcomings to then flip into a messiah complex, it wouldn't be consistent with his own art.

Tbh, I feel like the album concept could've been executed better and the messaging is a bit of a mess It's not helped by him not doing interviews, this album really would've benefitted from him explaining it more

The messaging being a mess works in its favor imo, i think the point of the album is that Kendrick doesnā€™t have it all figured it out and is answer seeking

  • Jun 29, 2022

Kendrick in this era makes me think of John Lennon. The long blown out hairstyle he's worn sometimes, the album cover kinda looks like a raggedy version of the bed-ins for peace pictures, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band was made while John undertook primal therapy, and John was killed because of his comment about The Beatles being more famous than Jesus

Its not that much of a mess either imo the message very clear theres just alot of intentional contradictions within the album

Or you could just try and figure it out for yourself. Or not, itā€™s kind of up to you and how much youā€™re willing to put into it, and potentially get out of it as a result.
