One thing that always worried me for someone that wants to go into film is that you see all these people or YouTubers that have so much knowledge about films and theories and other mediums but yet they struggle to make a good story. Why is that?
The same reason it's relationship gurus who can't find good partners and coaches who can't play the sports they coach.
Being technically proficient at something especially creative does not guarantee success especially because want isn't always that proficiency.
So yeah you know story structure but that doesn't mean you have a good story to tell or the imagination to present it well.
I think you can have talent without creativity, but I don’t think you can have creativity without talent.
For example, Charlie Puth has talent, but he’s not very creative.
But you can’t really name a successful musician that is creative without also being talented, because I think being creative is a talent in and of itself
Wrong
i wonder about this. whether you can teach creativity and im not sure. However, i do think you can somewhat excercise and improve your own creative capacity. there are things you can do to be more creative. you can place constraints on your self so that you have limited tools to work with, sometimes this jumpstarts creativity. you can force yourself to go outside your comfort zone when you are making music or whatever, and this can help to be more creative. for example, if you always start with drums, start with chords or start with a bassline
if you are constantly pushing yourself to be more creative in ways like that, i think you will get "better" at being creative
Oh yea of course. I agree w/ this. If you go out your way to try and do certain tactics to improve your creativity then sure it’ll come, probably at a way slower rate but it’s there sure
Pretentious ass thread.
Calling artists uncreative or untalented based on your taste while they have millions of fans who fw them is some braindead take. The music just not for you and move on.
Worst user on the site by a landslide

This also why artists use certain equipment
Like Dilla doing the crazy stuff he did on an mpc because that’s all he had
It’s also how artists develop unique styles

you can 100% be creative without being talented in a GENERAL sense. the difference is for a career artist, this isn't going to happen, because you need talent to get well known (or at least well liked) to begin with. like someone could easily be creative enough to conceptualize an amazing concept for an album but not be talented enough to make said album.

True but I was positing that being creative is a talent in and of itself, therefore you can’t be creative without being talented
I don’t think impact on music works entirely as a metric of gauging one’s talent versus creativity because there are ways of supplementing ones commercial appeal in addition to the music, which might play a direct part in the circulation of it.

oh okay, i see what you mean
I kinda think of being creative as a talent itself.
But yeah there's a lot gifted musicians/vocalists who can't make a song. Feel like that's the distinction b/n a musician and an artist
